One of the biggest rumours ripping through the press area at yesterday's Games Stars Live and EGN event concerned the possibility of Xbox Live play on Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 4.
"I'm afraid there's nothing confirmed at the moment," delivered a typically tight-lipped Konami official when questioned on the matter. "You'll just have to wait and see."
Wait? Us? Not to be deterred, we battled our way onto Konami's extremely busy stand, grabbed hold of one the Xbox portals for a quick hands-on, and to our surprise, convinced ourselves that we spotted Live listed on the options menu. Could Pro Evolution Soccer's Xbox debut really be set for online play? Or was our tired, pixel-drunk eyes merely playing tricks on us?
Of course, not being a final version, Konami's seemingly unsubtle hint could simply be a 'test' menu with Live play only a possibility at this stage. Or it could just be options to upload statistics and ranking ladders online, rather than to play competitively with your best mate over in Accrington.
Still, the prospects bode well don't you think, especially with FIFA 2005 definitely poised to enter the online arena. Expect more on this story soon, not just with the Xbox version, but with other incarnations too.
Pro Evolution Soccer 4 releases in October on PS2, Xbox and PC, and yes, it is bloody good. Even if we did get trashed 3-0...
