Well, we guess it had to come. EA Sports have covered pretty much every other base with its mighty footballing franchise and now it has announced FIFA Street, a hip new urban incarnation of the beautiful game.
Will this mean jumpers for goalposts, rush goalie and being brutally hacked down on harsh tarmac before going home crying to your mum saying, "It's my ball and you're not playing anymore"?
Almost certainly not, since FIFA Street is being developed by EA Sports Canada and will feature international soccer stars going back to their roots for some four-on-four or one-or-one (steady) action in a variety of worldwide locales.
Apparently success on the street will give you enough cred to start building your own team from the myriad superstars on offer. EA are also focusing on the wild tricks and outrageous skills which have characterised other EA 'Street' franchises like NBA and NFL. Versions are planned for Cube, PS2 and Xbox although there's no word on release date other than a vague sounding 'next year'.
"FIFA Street is a highly-anticipated combination of arcade action blended with the culture of freestyle street soccer," said senior producer Wil Mozell. "By removing the rules from the simulation soccer experience, FIFA Street exposes the heart of the world's beautiful game, on-the-ball flare and individual style."
Of course, it's a trick that's been tried before. We do remember a very old Puma Street Soccer-style game which was pretty acceptable but Acclaim's recent Urban Freestyle Soccer was a bit ropey. And FIFA Street will have to work extra hard to compete with the current king of kickers, Pro Evo 4.
