"The Lara Croft character is resilient and totally unstoppable. In Tomb Raider: Legend, we explore these core personality traits and reveal the Lara Croft gamers have been waiting to see," is the word from Lara Croft's creator Toby Gard, brought on board to lend his talent to Tomb Raider: Legend, as Eidos delivers first official details on Croft's next adventure.
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend, to give the game its full title, is being handled by outfit Crystal Dynamics of course. It's said that the studio has conducted months of painstaking research into the franchise, peeking into every available nook and cranny, which has resulted in a game that evolves the brand while also "building on the original values of compelling character and suspense-filled adventure gameplay," says Eidos.
"In setting the stage for the Tomb Raider franchise moving forward, we took ourselves back to Lara's origins, asked ourselves the hard questions and challenged ourselves to think differently," adds Chip Blundell, vice president of brand marketing, Eidos Inc. "Who is Lara Croft? What makes her tick? How is she relevant today? Only by answering these questions could we ensure that gamers get the experience they deserve with the character they love."
In Tomb Raider: Legend, Lara Croft "comes alive with intricately animated expressions, moves and abilities," according to Eidos. A more fluid Lara is promised thanks to new character animations and controls, with the heroine moving through "stunning environments [which are described as "living"] with grace and precision, while an understanding of the game's original appeal reinvigorates the fundamental explore-and-solve adventure experience."
Eidos and Crystal Dynamics are breathing life into Croft, Lara's new character model featuring natural structure, realistic textures, detailed facial features and reactive eyes, and because this is Tomb Raider the former queen of the videogame icon world will be kitted out with plenty of firepower and vital tools of the trade - a magnetic grappling device, binoculars, frag grenades, personal lighting device and communications equipment are mentioned so far.
No details on the storyline have been officially released yet, but Eidos plans to reveal more on www.tombraider.com on April 12. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend will swing into action on PS2, Xbox and PC, date to be confirmed.
