Just how bad of an idea is the Doom movie? It's got gurning part-time wrestler the Rock in it for a start. And last year internet-browsing Doom fanboys went mental when scriptwriter Dave Callaham tried to explain why he was diverging from the plot of the game series a little.
Yikes. Yet, regardless of the number of stunningly disappointing Hollywood adaptations of videogames we've been forced to sit through, there's always something intriguing about the idea of your favourite game up on the big screen. So here's a few new stills from the Doom movie to whet your appetite, courtesy of www.bereitsgesehen.de.
The Doom movie is set in 2145, the same year as the Doom 3 game, but it seems Callaham wasn't joking about changing the plot. Rather than taking place on Mars, the Doom movie is set on the distant planet Olduvai. A Special Ops squadron led by The Rock (he's playing the role of Sarge) is reacting to a distress call from a science lab on the planet. Turns out a bunch of demonic mutants are eating the scientists.
Karl Urban, who has appeared in Lord of the Rings and The Bourne Supremacy, plays the lead role as John "Reaper" Grimm. He's the previously unnamed Marine of the game, and he'll be the one that takes the fight all the way to hell.
Funnily enough Grimm isn't featured in these stills, but The Rock, Al Weaver and DeObia Operai certainly are. And don't they look moody?
Doom the movie is slated for a US release on October 21, with a European release shortly after. Andrzej Bartkowiak (Cradle 2 The Grave) is handling directorial duties.
