Dante wakes up to DMC 3 special edition

Enhanced version of Dante's Awakening joins Sony's budget label in US, but no cheapo version for Europe unfortunately

Capcom has announced plans to release a special edition of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening on PS2 in North America. Due out on January 24, the enhanced version boasts no less than "a horde" of additional content, according to the company, new options, an additional character and, yes!, redesigned packaging. It's joining Sony's Greatest Hits collection, which means you'll be able to pick it up for the very reasonable sum of $19.95.

Unfortunately, Capcom confirmed with us earlier that it has no plans to release the special edition of DMC 3 in Europe, but hey, if you're a die-hard Dante fan then there's always the old import option from our friends over at to get your improved Dante kicks.

Capcom's provided a lengthy list of new features being added to the revamped Dante's Awakening, which we won't post in its entirety because we'd probably be here till Doomsday if we did, but here's a few selected highlights:

  • New playable character - play as Dante's evil twin brother, Vergil, with his own unique "Dark Slayer" fighting style
  • New "Jester" enemy - previously featured only in cut scenes, Jester has been implemented as a new boss character
  • Adjusted difficulty levels offer more balanced gameplay as players choose from five options including a new Very Hard mode
  • Bloody Palace Mode - Dante is pitted against an onslaught of enemies in this survival mode
  • Movie Mode - Unlocked cut scenes can be viewed either one at a time or all in a row
  • Combo system - Equip Dante with up to four different weapons that can be swapped at anytime, allowing the freedom to develop a range of fighting moves and combinations
  • Customize up to six different fighting styles:
    • Trickster - Evasive style which allows Dante to deftly dodge enemy attacks with speed and finesse
    • Swordmaster - Close-range specialty maximizes the impact of up close attacks with the blade
    • Gunslinger - Long-range style that lets Dante blow away enemies with his fire arms
    • Royal Guard - Counter attack and guard expertise against strong enemy power
    • Quicksilver - Unlockable style that allows Dante to stop time and cause massive damage to enemies
    • Doppelganger - An unlockable that produces a replica that fights alongside Dante

Devil May Cry 3 shoves us into a time machine to transport us to pre-original Devil May Cry era to explore Dante's history, which involves a clash between Sparda's (demon warrior who rescued humanity from obliteration) twin sons - Dante and Vergil. Apparently, says Capcom, "These precursory events disclose the complex roots of Dante's character and reveal insight into his clouded past", and there were we thinking it was all just about gratuitous violence.
