Jerry Bruckheimer ready to PoP?

Pirates of the Caribbean producer ready to turn his attention to Prince of Persia movie adaptation

Rumours of a Prince of Persia movie have been doing the rounds for quite some time now, with Variety linking the adaptation to Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer back in 2004.

Now though, Bruckheimer has indicated that work on the PoP movie project could begin imminently, once his next film Deja Vu is out the way. Speaking to website ComingSoon.net, the producer stated: "Then we have a thing called 'Prince of Persia,' which is a big video game, that we're considering doing."

Variety magazine reported back in 2004 that Bruckheimer was negotiating a deal to secure the rights to the Ubisoft game, part of which involved a script from Sands of Time creator Jordan Mechner. At the time, Mechner explained, "Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story - much as Pirates did with the theme park ride."

According to Variety, the plot for the PoP movie goes something like this: "Set in 9th century medieval Persia, about a young adventurous prince who uncovers a dangerous artifact in a remote mountain kingdom and with the help of an enemy princess, must stop a despot from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy all mankind."

Unlike the recent spate of horrible, horrible game-to-movie adaptations, Bruckheimer's got the money, talent and expertise do something decent with the franchise. At first glance, he seems like the perfect candidate to give PoP the full cinematic makeover. Of course, we were excited when we found out Kylie was going to be in Street Fighter 2 as well - and look how that turned out.
