Mad Doc Software is currently whipping into shape a new Star Trek title for PC and Xbox 360, it's being reported. It's named Star Trek: Legacy and is nestling itself into the action-strategy genre.
According to STGU (Star Trek Gaming Universe) forums, first word on the game has appeared in US magazine Game Informer, which reveals that Legacy's single-player campaign is spread over three Star Trek timelines (Original Series, The Next Generation and Enterprise). It's said the player will always be fighting on behalf of the Federation with, as you might expect, key opponents reflecting the TV series' major enemies in each era. In order to intertwine the eras, the storyline features the Iconians, a race which apparently boasts presence in all three timelines.
"An ancient species called the Iconians that have time travel technology and I guess a Vulcan scientist called Sovac has gone mad and is trying to create a logical utopia. Using the technology of the Iconians. He makes some bad choices in alliances (borg) which creates some kind of Borg/Iconinan abomination. Finishing with all the captains from all the timelines working together in the climax," STGU founder ChessMess has said of the plot in the forum thread.
In addition, the game reportedly kicks off with players in command of the Enterprise NX-01 and then as events play out you leap through eras. Star Trek fans will probably be really, really excited by the prospect of witnessing the expansion of Starfleet and playing a key role in its development.
It sounds as thought ship battles will be big bananas in Legacy, with the development team taking pains to ensure that the space fights in game are spot-on representations of the TV shows' (and movies') unique space confrontations. It's mentioned too that throughout the game you'll earn what are being called Command Points when you're victorious in battle, and these points can be used to 'buy' new ships for your fleet or upgrade existing vessels.
And yes, it's reported that multiplayer is being catered for on both Xbox 360 (via Xbox Live) and on PC.
Star Trek: Legacy has yet to receive an official announcement, but according to the folks on STGU forums it's currently pencilled in for a September 2006 release.
