MGS: Portable Ops sneaks onto PSP

Sony's handheld finally gets a 'proper' Metal Gear adventure

Konami has announced Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops for PSP, bringing the classic stealth adventure gameplay to Sony's portable for the first time. Unlike the card-based strategy of the Metal Gear Ac!d games, Portable Ops is a new chapter in the Metal Gear Solid series, set in South America in 1970, following on from the events of the PS2's Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater.

The third-person action game is based around a single-player campaign which sees Snake establishing his own Foxhound outfit in order to track down the revolutionary army Fox, which has sparked a civil revolt. We're promised the opportunity to witness Snake's 'greatest tragedy' as the story unfolds, fleshing out characters such as Para-Medic, Major Zero and Sigint along the way.

Recruitment of comrades is an integral part of the campaign mode which also ties in neatly with the multiplayer modes. You'll be able to take your band of brothers from the single-player game and pit them against those of online rivals in wireless multiplayer skirmishes, even trading between characters that are met online.

A further innovation to the multiplayer is the inclusion of a 'white flag' system, which means online battles need not be fought to the death - if your pride can handle it, there's always the option of surrender, giving your platoon the chance to live to fight another day.

Konami is also promising an intuitive new third-person camera that's optimised for the handheld, designed to allow a better view of Snake's surroundings so players can more easily pinpoint key spots for hiding and setting up ambushes.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is out next year.
