Captain Kirk to voice Captain Kirk in Legacy

William Shatner beamed up to lend authenticity to Bethesda's Star Trek: Legacy. UPDATE: All captains secured!

William Shatner is to voice Captain Kirk in Bethesda's forthcoming Star Trek game, Star Trek: Legacy, it's emerged.

++ UPDATE ++

Since posting this news story, Bethesda has announced that it's secured the voice talents of all Trek captains for Legacy:

  • William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk
  • Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard
  • Avery Brooks as Captain Benjamin Lafayette Sisko
  • Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway
  • Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer

"I couldn't imagine someone else playing Captain Kirk, even in a videogame, so I kind of got a little territorial," the actor told Reuters recently when discussing the role.

Shatner went on to say that interest in Star Trek has fallen off over the last couple of years, but it appears he hopes Bethesda's project can re-ignite the Trek's popularity. "It's been around a long time, it's a staple of American life and I think we need something new and different in Star Trek", he commented.

"If it's a good game, keeping true to the characters the best they can and having an interesting story that branches, I think a game can bring a freshness to a franchise like Star Trek,' Shatner added.

News of Shatner's involvement in Legacy comes only days after Bethesda revealed it has secured the talents of veteran Star Trek scriptwriter Dorothy "D.C." Fontana for its game.

Due in the autumn, Star Trek: Legacy - PC and Xbox 360 - is an action-strategy game spanning the entire Star Trek universe that finds you strapping on commander boots as an Admiral of a task force of warships that you control in small and large-scale battles.
