Star Trek: Tactical Assault Review

Going boldly on its DS debut

No, sadly you don't get to play Mr TJ Hooker himself, which is a crying shame, but you do find yourself in a world full of Klingon negotiations and original 'Shatner' series weapons and detail. The controls are all on the touch screen - governing shields, navigation, weapons and communication all at once - and the displays show the same lovely retro rainbow coloured panels as the original TV series. Aw.

Although there's some slow and long-winded combat in space - which is so unresponsive, it feels like sailing through treacle - there's also a fair amount of text scrolling, hailing and chatting to ships and trade negotiations, which is a little more sophisticated than we were expecting, to be honest. Oh, and watch out for the explosion-making objects on the periphery of your vision - very handy for making you explode in a loud punch of unconvincing fire.
