BioWare/Pandemic deal gets go-ahead

Federal Trade Commission OKs EA's purchase of Mass Effect, Mercenaries developers

The Federal Trade Commission has OK'd Electronic Arts' pricey acquisition of BioWare/Pandemic.

According to the Associated Press, antitrust regulators approved EA's purchase of the revered sibling studios from VC firm Elevation Partners in a deal totaling $860 million.

The acquisition gives megapublisher EA a greater foothold in the RPG and action genres, and makes for a handful of wholly-owned properties, an area in the company's portfolio that EA has been trying to enhance.

The AP said the deal was noted on a list of transactions that reached "early termination," which simply means the regulatory review was completed before the end of the 30-day window.
