The Week Ahead - 22/11/07

Feature: Plenty to get stuck into

A weird and slightly disturbing trend has emerged this week, mainly instigated by Ubisoft. What's with all the titles beginning with 'My'? My French Coach, My Spanish Coach, My Horse And Me, My Animal Centre Australia.

Why not just go the whole hog and start publishing titles like My Weekly Shop Down at Lidl? Or perhaps sales success could be found in the form of My Attempt to Look Busy At the Office While Actually Surfing CVG? We don't approve.

In more positive news Mass Effect is released this week which will be a panacea for anyone who still hasn't found anything to match the narrative brilliance of Knights of the Old Republic. Further gems include Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, the latest Final Fantasy XI expansion and mini-game lovers will find much to enjoy in Mario & Sonic At the Olympics.

Mass Effect (Xbox 360)

With titles like Forza Motorsport 2, Bioshock and Halo 3 Xbox 360 gamers have already been blessed with deep, immersive software this year. Expect Mass Effect to be every bit as genre defining and successful when it's released at the end of the week. You play Commander Shepard, a veteran soldier tasked with defending galactic peace by thwarting the advance of a new threat in the form of the Saren. One of the main themes of Mass Effect is the relationship between biological life and artificial life. Every single species in the galaxy relies on computers linked to a vast data network. If a rogue agent could access the network the results could be cataclysmic... At the heart of the title is choice. Players will be encouraged to go their own way, choose a path through the games moral maze and respond to character interactions in countless ways. While a similar morality system was present in Knights of the Old Republic this title does not ask players to merely chose between good or evil, black or white. The situations require careful consideration with moral grey areas existing in nearly every decision. Be very excited.
