Left 4 Dead (ETA: Summer)
We used to fancy Alyx, heroine of Half-Life 2. With the details of Episode Three still secret, we're starting to lust over a new Valve girl. It's Zoe, the super-lovely civilian fleeing a zombie invasion.
She'll emote, flutter her eyelashes, congratulate and gesticulate just like a Half-Life 2 NPC. But this is a co-op game: inside her skin is one of your best friends. Ross, for example.
Left 4 Dead is a gamer's dream: the best shooter developers on the planet bringing us a ravening horde of fast zombies for you to fight - alongside three friends online. Unscripted and unplanned, zombies attack from sides; your job is to fight your way to a rescue point.
Add to that dream Valve's experience with imbuing their 3D models with humanity, and you have something truly special. As the undead claw at Zoe's (Ross's) face, pinning her to the floor, she'll scream and shout. When you shoot them off, she'll thank you.
When a 'Boomer', one of Left 4 Dead's special zombs (a big, fat suicide bomber, exploding on contact), turns the corner, you'll hear automatic shouts of "Boooommer!" These moments are designed to create an almost subliminal Hollywood ambience.
Much as your team-mates yell and shout in Team Fortress 2: "Cheers Doc" and "Thank you!", your team-mates in Left 4 Dead are similarly verbose. You're meant to feel you and your friends are the stars of a brilliant zombie movie, right down to that vaguely lusty feeling you have toward that spunky heroine, Zoe. Ross, come here a moment.
And the final brilliant touch? Along with the Boomer, you'll come across three other special zombie types.
The Hunter can leap from building to building, running across rooftops. When he finds a good spot he can camouflage himself, chameleon-like, waiting in ambush. The Tank is just that: several tons of armoured flesh that can punch aside cars and smack fragile humans across a street, while the Smoker can drop a long, noose-like tongue to lasso an unsuspecting human.
The bad news? Human players can take control of these monsters at any point. In Left 4 Dead, the zombies can be as devious as the men and women they're chasing. Come summer, we won't be venturing outside. We'll be indoors, playing with the dead.
Legendary: The Box (ETA: Spring)
Thief Charles Deckard can't resist opening Pandora's Box after being tricked into stealing it. Out burst all manner of formerly mythical creatures intent on killing. There's only one solution: kill them instead; rapidly, with shotguns. As society collapses, this potentially fun FPS sends you to London and New York to try to control the hell you've unleashed. Yup, it's a ridiculous concept, but it might just work.
