2D side-scrolling shooter Bionic Commando: Rearmed has been awarded mature ratings from multiple certification boards, including an 18+ from PEGI.
The remake of the 8bit NES classic, which will debut on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and PC, also gained a 'mature' (17+) rating in Australia and North American and a 16+ in Germany.
No official reason has so far been issued, but developer Grin has posted an update on its website (spoilers, beware) that hints at the inclusion of a five second cut scene to do with the final boss.
Producer Ben Judd says, "No doubt, when the original team made an infamous dictator as the original bad guy and showed his demise in explosive 8-bit glory, they too were taking some serious risks.
"It was a tough decision to make. But it came down to either paying homage to the original game and taking the higher rating 'hit', or to watering down one of the most important scenes of the original.
"We've come this far in recreating the game so we may as well go all the way. Of course, this cuts us out of a larger target audience, which is just one more challenge to making the game profitable."
