After five consecutive weeks at the top of the all-formats sales chart, research firm Chart Track said Monday that Capcom's Street Fighter IV, released last week for PS3 and Xbox 360, has debuted at number one, dropping the exer-game down to number two.
Chart Track said the latest entry in the seminal fighting game series became the "fastest selling traditional beat 'em up since the All Formats Chart began back in 1997."
Chart Track said sales of the PS3 version edged out those of Xbox 360, 53 percent versus 47 percent, respectively, in the game's first week.
The news follows Capcom's announcement that it has shipped 2 million copies of the fighter worldwide.
Capcom appears to have a handle on the post-holiday release strategy, as the publisher has had a February number one in the U.K. for the past three years: Lost Planet in 2007, Devil May Cry 4 in 2008 and Street Fighter IV this year.
The March 13 release of Resident Evil 5 is poised to place the publisher on the charts once again next month.
Sales of Wii Fit were up 20 percent, Chart Track said.
Taking the third spot was the new PC release, Dawn of War II from Relic Entertainment. FEAR 2, which debuted at number two a week prior, dropped to number 10.
The rest of the Chart Track results for the past week are below:
1. Street Fighter IV
2. Wii Fit
3. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II
4. Ben 10: Alien Force
5. FIFA 09
