Yamauchi: Gran Turismo PSP aimed at new players

Decided not to call it 'Gran Turismo Spyder'

Gran Turismo is one of the most hardcore racing series on consoles, but creator Kazunori Yamauchi says the new PSP version will target new users.

The new racer will hit shelves on October 1 alongside the PSP Go, serving as the handheld's flagship launch title. And Yamauchi is hoping the game will pull in new players to the simulation series.

Which is why it's simply called 'Gran Turismo', he told Kotaku, rather than 'Gran Turismo Portable' or 'Gran Turismo Spyder', which were titles under consideration. The aim is not not to scare off gamers that might be put off by entering a series in its seventh iteration.

That's not to say it'll be a diluted affair; he said repeatedly during Sony's E3 press conference (full details of which you can read here) that it will be a "full scale" GT game. It packs 800 cars and 35 tracks with 68 layout variations, so we believe him.
