Final Fantasy XIII will not use the traditional levelling-up system of most RPGs, Japanese mag Shounen Jump has revealed.
The game will instead employ a new system called the Crystalium System, according to Andriasang's translation. When you batter enemies you get Crystal Points which can be used to unlock new skills and abilities on a circular chart.

Unlocking new skills opens up new paths on the chart, giving you access to more skills when you earn enough points. Abilities can also be upgraded, as each characters' parameters are individually boosted to your liking.
Sounds similar to the Sphere Grid system in Final Fantasy X, which wasn't one of our favourites, but we'll keep an open mind for FFXIII, because it looks and sounds absolutely incredible.
