Sony: Demon's Souls rejection was 'mistake'

Platform holder admits oversight with hit Atlas RPG

Sony has admitted that its decision to pass on publishing Demon's Souls - possibly the most talked-about import-only PS3 game - was a "mistake".

Believing at first that the game would only appeal to a small niche, Sony passed up the opportunity to publish Demon's Souls as a first-party title, which was snapped up by Atlus and went on to become a sleeper hit, pushing on to nearly 250,000 copies sold, according to 1Up.

"That was a mistake," said Sony Japan Studios rep Yeonkyung Kim at GDC last week. "It should have come out as a first-party title," he added in a discussion over the struggles of localisation.

The game later released in America, but is yet to see a release here. Publisher Southpeak picked up another Atlus title, 3D Dot Game Heroes, for UK. But it later dismissed speculation that it may also bring Demon's Souls to our shores.

Demon's Souls 2 is also rumoured to be on the way, following reports in Japanese magazine Dengeki Games.
