Gears of War 3 gets dedicated servers

Epic looks to fix online problems

Gears of War 3 will include dedicated server support, much to the relief of fans, CVG has learnt.

Developer Epic games has made the move in an attempt to address online problems that affected the last game, including sluggish matchmaking and occasional lag, we've heard.

Although now mostly addressed via Xbox Live patches, the Gears 2 issues left a bad taste in many early adopters' mouths - something that hopefully won't happen again with the third game.

When contacted on the issue, Gears designer Cliff Bleszinski told us that dedicated servers are "just a rumour".

Read everything we know about the big sequel in our huge Gears of War 3 details blowout. It's sounding very good indeed...

I so hope this is true, I loved the MP game modes on this game but the lag and matching was too much to tolerate and once I had finished with horde I havnt touched it since, shame as it is a fantastic game.

I dont think I am alone in saying that European players facing an entire team of US hosted matched might have well not bothered. The lag for the majority of the time I attempted to play it online was game destroying.

Which is why Horde mode gave me many countless hours of gaming pleasure, while multiplayer did not.

Am I missing something or are CVG now quoting rumours as fact?

Hopefully a big 360 exclusive now getting dedicateds will start a trend on consoles. Sony's first party games often have them already(Warhawk, R2,KZ2 et al) but Live, as the paid for service has lacked them for games that would really have benefitted from them.

We MIGHT even see Activision forced into spending a little money on the long suffering COD massive now!

I expected Epic to do this, however, as the last Gears DESPERATELY needed this and without was a crumpled mess. It's 2010 and time for Live gamers to see what us PC gamers have known for a long time-hell, they might even understand why we got upset at having them taken away for BS reasons for MW2 now! Not that all Live gamers are blissfully unaware that P2P is lag central but the widening knowledge this move will bring can only be good for us all.

L4D with dedicated servers and allowing ,mods on 360 might also make it worth the current entry fee which, to me, makes it about a millionth the value of it's PC brother. It's about time we got better value in areas that matter(i.e not chat or facebook features) from our Live subs.

lol at "occasional lag", only time you don't experience lag in Gears 2 is when you're the host, which for me is very rare unless I'm playing Horde mode.
