Crytek: We'd make PS3 exclusive

But Microsoft was best fit for Codename: Kingdoms, says studio

Ruddy marvellous game maker Crytek has told CVG that it would consider creating a console exclusive game for Sony in future - just as it has for Microsoft with Codename: Kingdoms.

The Xbox 360 Kingdoms announcement was one of E3 2010's biggest shocks - and came complete with a very nifty trailer, starring a bloodied Centurion.

However, Crytek boss Cervat Yerli told CVG that the firm may yet extend a console exclusive offer to Sony - and that it has considered doing so in the past.

"We are an independent studio so we can (a) Do whatever we want and (b) [Have the freedom] to announce something else next week if we want to," said Yerli.

He added: "Sony is a partner that we would definitely love to work with. A [PS3 exclusive] is something we considered before - we talked about it a lot, but for reasons of portfolio or timing in the past it didn't work out. But that doesn't mean in the future it wouldn't work.

"Sony is a great company, so is Nintendo and so is Microsoft. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses, and luckily our strengths are almost always complementary to their weaknesses."

However, Yerli said that making Kingdoms for Microsoft's console was a "natural fit".

"We wanted to see how it would feel like to just work for Microsoft or work on a project; with Sony, with Microsoft or with Nintendo, just a first-party relation," he commented.

"We have been talking with Microsoft for five or six years now about working together - and for some time I have said that I don't want to work [exclusively with a] first-party. The time came around where we said maybe this IP, Kingdoms, could be very strong for a first-party platform. We asked Microsoft and they said 'yes, that would be fantastic'."

We bloody bet they did. That trailer - as if you needed reminding - looks ace.

Crytek is currently working hard to complete Crysis 2 for EA Partners. It's a game that looks gorgeous, is fully playable in 3D and which Crytek reckons has the best AI in gaming history. One for the calendar, then.
