Old characters swept away for accessibility reasons

Metal Gear Solid: Rising will shun old characters so newcomers won't need to brush up on the backstory, says creative producer Shigenobu Matsuyama.

"We're probably not going to show too many characters in Rising because, since it's a new part of a series, we don't really want to refer to and dwell upon the Metal Gear saga so much," Matsuyama told gamesTM magazine.

"We want newcomers to the game to come in and play freely without needing to know and understand the background of the whole Metal Gear Solid universe," he continued. "We don't want to have it all tied up with the story from MGS2 or MGS4 and make it too complicated."

Obviously, Raiden is a returning character but it looks like we won't have the likes of Ocelot or Vamp jumping in to confuse things. Or is this a red herring from the producer in a series famed for them? Hideo Kojima famously fooled everyone with Metal Gear Solid 2, so we're not ready to rule their returns out just yet...
