John Carmack's surprise title announced today turned out to be RAGE for iPhone. Sorry, Doom fans.
Carmack revealed the shooter via a video demo during his keynote at QuakeCon, which kicked off today. The impressive demo showed the game running high-detail visuals at 60 frams-per-second on the Apple hardware, Carmac claiming that it "kill anything done on the Xbox or PlayStation 2".
We give him that. The id Tech 5 engine certainly looks to be working wonders on the iPhone, Kotaku even going so far as to saying it "might even be able to give a few current-gen titles a run for their money".
According to the report, the game will run on iPhone 4 and 3GS, and although it's specifically confirmed, we think it safe to assume it'll run in mental high-res on iPhone 4's Retina display screen.
Carmack revealed that two version of the game will be released; a compact "show-off" version this year, and a larger more fully-featured game next year alongside the console versions. See a video of it in action through the source link.
