Red Faction Armageddon

Volition senior designer talks about the high-destruction shooter

When THQ announced the sequel to office favourite Red Faction: Guerrilla, GamesMaster was a little nervous about possibly losing the red planet sandbox in favour of underground caverns.

Senior designer David Abzug put their mind at ease, however, and get them all excited about the forthcoming Armageddon sequel...

What's happened to the Red Faction since the end of Guerrilla?

With the Earth Defense Force kicked off Mars, the Red Faction has expanded to fill most of the roles that used to be covered by the EDF. They have basically become the colonist government. This is, of course, in addition to their role as the colonist military.

Will the move underground affect the gameplay in Armageddon?

It has increased the scale of destructibility. In RF:G there were buildings. Even some big buildings. But in Red Armageddon we have 360 degrees of destructibility; giant stalactites you can destroy, buildings hanging from the ceiling of huge caverns and facades that run up the side of caves. Everything around the player, including the floor he stands on, can be destroyed.

Can you travel to the surface of Mars in Armageddon?

Yes. You get to see the surface before it's devastated and after it becomes a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

What can you tell us about the new alien enemies?

The creatures you encounter in Armageddon have a variety of abilities. The ones we've shown can jump great distances and stick to walls. They have ranged weapons and huge scythe-like blades on their arms.

Is the Nano Forge weapon back? Has it been improved?

The Nano Forge has benefitted from two generations of experimentation. It can now repair any destroyed object in the world as well as having a host of other powers it conveys to Darius. We'll be revealing other abilities soon.

Apart from the new Magnet Gun, are there more weapons of mass destruction in Armageddon?

When we designed the weapons we had two goals in mind. The first was to pay homage to the weapons from Guerrilla. The second was to make them take advantage of the destruction engine. They needed to be fun to use but when mixed with destruction they become even cooler. The Magnet Gun is a perfect example. In Red Faction: Armageddon you get to rip the wall off a building and throw it at someone. The entire world becomes your ammo.

Can you tell us more about the new exo suits and vehicles?

We've taken advantage of the time gap since the last Red Faction to move the tech forward. You haven't seen the biggest weapon Darius shoots. And you haven't seen the biggest thing he'll drive either...

Any new online modes we can look forward to?

We've rebuilt multiplayer from the ground up to give a new experience to the player. We'll be revealing our multiplayer plans soon.
