Epic: Gears of War 3 delay 'not a quality issue'

Lengthy delay "a business decision", says executive producer Rod Fergusson

Epic has told us that delaying Gears of War from next April to autumn 2011 was "a business decision" and not "a quality issue".

Executive producer Rod Fergusson added that the game is on track to be the most polished Gears title yet.

"I know fans are going to be disappointed with the new release date, but rest assured that this is a business decision between partners, and not a quality issue," he said.

"Gears 3 was on track to be the most polished Gears of War game ever when it released in April, and this additional time allows us to polish it that much more before it hits shelves next fall.

"Next week we have a major multiplayer press visit at Epic HQ, and I'm really looking forward to the fans getting to see and hear about Gears 3 Versus multiplayer for the first time. Lots more exciting news to come."

Earlier today Gears of War 3 was delayed by a minimum of five months.

Explaining the shock move, Microsoft said that it wants the game to be "the marquee title for the holiday season", adding that "Gears of War 3 promises to be the biggest entertainment launch of 2011."

Yep that's a genius decision, delay the game 5 months so more people buy it in the crowded autumns we have every year.

You're not helping man, just shut up. I was supposed to be playing this in April, now I have to wait a whole year.

A lot can happen in a year. I could get run over, get a lass pregnant, lose some fingers in an attack by enemy ninjas, all manner of things could happen that will impair my gaming life.

And you want to f*ck with me over money and marketing? You have no soul, you horrible, selfish pigs.

End of the day it's a business :| no room for a soul in competitive business.

thought so. when nintendo/sakaguchi announced the last story was getting delayed until next year it was done so to make the game better. this doesn't apply here.

rather it seems to be the product of ms twitching that sony and nintendo have some decent exclusives next year and the 360 is starting to look a bit threadbare in that department.

    that's a shame.

I don't blame em. The first half of 2011 is packed with games...

    Killzone 3
    InFamous 2
    Twisted Metal
    Motorstorm Apocalyspe
    Socom 4
    Portal 2
    Crysis 2
    Brink
    Bulletstorm
    Dead Space 2

I'm sure there are a ton more, those were just off the top of my head. Its a crowded line-up thats for sure.

I couldn't care really, but do you believe in that statement?? I liked kz2 campaign (though mp was pants) but didn't odst sell more in it's first 3 days than kz2 did in 7 months??? Kz2 sales weren't as strong as you think.... I hardly think epic even gave kz3 a second thought when considering when to release gears3, more likely it would be the other way round

LOL still playing sales, well wii fit sold more than osdt and reach so i guess by your rules sales means quality and wii games must be the best.killzone 2 mp was great ,with 32players and its graphics and remember its just number 2,unlike halo 6 or is it 7 now.
Killzone franchise is now a much bigger name than it was and much bigger than gears ,just like GT franchise is a much bigger franchise than halo and blows that away in sales.
your getting confused with units sold n game quality, both are totally different and the fact you have to bring up halo shows your desperate.
The question is do you really think gears is bigger than killzone or do you still play sales.

I'm with you on that one headspin. Killzone games have always underperformed against the hype. Gears 3 is definitely a bigger launch than Killzone 3 for their respective consoles from where I'm sitting.

It won't matter at all anyway, the two aren't in serious competition, seeing as both are exclusives.

I reckon this is more of a "we don't have much for the 360 in Q3 and Q4 next year, let's delay Gears" decision.

    EDIT: PS3 killzonefanboy whatever
you're argument is retarded. Of course, when we talk of how "big" a game will be, companies look at sales. Who gives a s**t if MW2 got launched next to a far superior game if no one buys it? It simply wouldn't have affected MW2 success.

So the argument that Gears is being delayed because of Killzone (an idiotic argument anyway, since, as I said, both are exclusives and thus will sell well) has to depend on sales. That's the only way the two would ever make an effect on each other's success.

Personally, I've played both Gears 2 and Killzone 2, I much prefer Gears and from sales and general opinion I believe, Gears is a bigger title.
You're just getting caught up in the PS3 vs 360 debate, which is pointless.

(Before you label me a 360 fanboy, I play most my games on PC)

I don't understand why people are so "I've been so screwed by M$!!!" about this. The bottom line is always the bottom line, businesses need to make money. Anyone who really thinks that this is going to have a major effect on their life and their 5 year plan needs to undertake a serious review of their past decisions - they done goofed somewhere...

Right, first off, why am I desperate?? Why would I want to be desperate??? You've seriously got me scratching my head lol....

I honestly enjoy gears more than killzone, is that okay with you? Although as I said I enjoyed killzone, as someone else pointed out it does under perform in the enjoyment stakes compared to gears, don't get me wrong I enjoyed it but not as much as gears and just to make you smile and be happy I will be buying kz3, there don't you feel better now?? Although gears story isn't anywhere near as good as say mass effect I still know what's going on and am really interested to see where gears 3 goes as regards to marcus's dad and the locust... Now, ask me what the story is in kz3 and I honestly couldn't tell you, that's how interesting the story was I found, couldn't even tell you what happened at the end although I finished it (I think it involved a bald dude, I dunno, can't really remember)... Saying that tho the campaign played well I thought as regards to gameplay but just couldn't be doing with the multiplayer, got a sense of emptiness and nothingness and not getting a kick from getting kills, just didn't work for me....

So yes, I think gears is bigger in every respect, suck it up....

The absolute bottom line is that BOTH games are going to be fantastic and now I don't have to work out which one to play first.

As long as they take their time and make it worth the wait.
Gears and gears2 were awesome, this is a day one purchase for me

I think people should just back off. As has already been mentioned by other people, Microsoft are thinking strategically. So what if you think Killzone 3 is going to wipe the floor with gears 3. there are plenty of other people who are fans of the gears series. I couldn't give a rat's arse about killzone.

now if you'll excuse me, i've got to go shoot some ps3fanboys......oops i mean locust hordes

Those in-game pics look positively gorgeous! :o

As for pictures 5 and 6...We're gonna need bigger guns.

"Gears of War 3" is one of my "Must Buy" games. I wonder what the exact business reason is for the decision to delay the launch by up to five months (or more)? A bit annoying to be frank.

After watching the E3 trailer I'm excited about Gears again. Gears 1 was (along with Viva Pinata and Oblivion) one of the main reasons I bought a 360; but Gears of War 2 was horrible when it came to story, GIANT WORM!!! and a VERY predictable Carmine death, 5 members in a 4 man team, wonder who is going to die. And around that time I started to play the Uncharted series which just does the whole 3rd person cover shooter/adventure better than Gears does so haven't been Gears biggest fan. But that trailer looked awesome : D the game looks exciting again and the ggame environment looks really good also : )

Once I got accustomed to the clumsy console controls (PC gamer at heart here,) for "Gears of War 2", it quickly elevated itself to one of the best gaming experiences I've had this generation - particularly on the Xbox 360 platform.

Oh I disagree completely. Uncharted's floaty controls could take some pointers from Gears' extremely tight and refined control mechanism.
