Europe gets its first video game museum

Rome-based museum to be completed next year

The first European museum entirely dedicated to the medium of video games will be unveiled at the Italian Videogame Developer Conference (IVDC) in December.

Dubbed ViGaMus and situated near the Piazza Mazzini in the centre of Rome, it's scheduled for completion in 2011.

Described as a "centre for the evolution of art, culture and technology in the history of videogames," ViGaMus will focus on the past, present and future of the medium.

IVDC president Marco Accordi Rickards said: "ViGaMus is the first of a raft of ambitious projects which sees the Italian videogames industry, Italian government and private investors working closely together towards a common goal.

"Building enterprise, skill sets and inspiration into the Italian videogames industry, ViGaMus sends a message to the world that Italy is confident, innovative and open for business."

It'd be interesting to go to a gaming museum but I wouldn't really want to be seen in a place as nerdy as that, even though I am a nerd.

there was a video game museum on the last floor of the Arche de la Defense in Paris, it lasted only about a year though and got closed 1 or 2 years ago.... this isn't the first one.

    Why not?

Gaming is a big part of modern culture and there's a huge interest in it's history. Mario is an icon in the same way that Daffy Duck is - so, it makes sense that some of the history and timeline is commemorated in a place like this.

I think we'll start to see a lot more of this popping up over the next couple of years - maybe even some documentaries about the gaming industry.

I'm pretty certain I'd find a museum about the history of games very boring indeed. I like playing games, looking forward to games and enjoying their worlds that they create - but the history of the different consoles, how they came about, the influential people and companies behind the games is a very dull subject as far as I'm concerned.

Because at the end of the day, games are a bit of fun, but aren't really important enough in my life to visit somewhere specifically to learn about their history.

Now the Smithsonian Museum of Air and Space, or the Museum of Natural History in New York - there are two museums that really are worthwhile visiting if you get the chance.

I went to a museum / exibition called something like "PLAY" or "PLAY-ON" at the natural history museum in London a few years ago.

I was suprised at how sad and geeky it all was laid out like that.
