An early version of Halo Reach contained competitive multiplayer space ship battles based on the 'Long Night of Solace' mission from the Campaign, Bungie has revealed.
The mission, which sees players exit Reach's orbit and battle with the Covenant in space, was to make the transition to the multiplayer portion of the game.
"We joked about it from time to time and even had a rough version of it working very early on in development," said Halo's creative director Marcus Lehto in the latest issue of Game Informer magazine.
"But the mechanics of it were pretty silly and we very quickly realised that the resulting gameplay experience wouldn't hit the bar we were aiming for, nor justify the amount of work required," he added.
"With so many features and so much content already committed, Reach was an incredibly ambitious project on an already aggressive schedule."
Enough dwelling on what could have been though - new maps are out on Tuesday. You're going to need all the practice you can get.
