Sony is on track to reach 15 million PlayStation 3 consoles sold in this business year which ends on March 31, 2011, it's said.
Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai said the new Move controller has helped boost annual sales to 15 million from 13 million in the previous business year.
"Sales at the end of the year are as we expected," Hirai, who heads up Sony's games unit, told reporters at a roundtable in Tokyo today (via Reuters).
As of this July, the PlayStation 3 was understood to have shipped around 35 million units worldwide.
In the same month Microsoft announced that Xbox 360 sales had reached 41.7m units.
Earlier this month Sony announced that it's shipped 4.2 million Move controllers, right after Microsoft boasted its rival motion cam Kinect sold 2.5 million units in its first 25 days on the market.
