PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai has dropped hints as the type of control interface we may see on the PSP2.
Acknowledging the success of Apple's iOS devices, Hirai said they ultimately appeal to a different crowd: "The games being played on Android and Apple platforms are fundamentally different from the world of immersive games that Sony Computer Entertainment, and PlayStation, aims for."
He obviously wouldn't speak freely of the much rumoured but still unconfirmed PSP2, but did go on to hint at the kind of controls Sony thinks work best for handheld gaming.
"Depending on the game, there are ones where you can play perfectly well with a touch panel," he said, adding: "But you can definitely play immersive games better with physical buttons and pads.
"I think there could be games where you're able to use both in combination."
A rear touch panel is one of a number of features repeatedly rumoured for the PSP2, including by patents from Sony itself.
