3DS likely region locked

Not looking good for importers

The Nintendo 3DS looks set to be region locked, hampering potential importers' plans to jump on next month's Japanese release.

The DS and DS Lite weren't region locked, enabling users to play imported titles on their locally bought handhelds, but that changed with the arrival of the DSi and looks set to continue with 3DS.

According to an email from Nintendo of Japan support (posted on ruliweb, via NeoGAF), the 3DS is region coded, meaning users won't be able to play games from different territories on the system.

This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, but that doesn't make it any less of a disappointment if true. We've left a message with Nintendo for confirmation.

Earlier today, the platform holder denied that it is to phase out the DSi in the UK to make way for a DSi XL / 3DS-only offering.
