Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has told CVG that he expects a new console generation to arrive by 2013.
Speaking in a recent interview, the Crysis 2 head said that while Xbox 360 and PS3 are platforms that have "not yet been maximised", he feels it's only a matter of time before successors arrive.

Microsoft said last year that it expects Kinect to help extend Xbox 360's lifespan to at least 2015, but Yerli's told us he thinks mysterious Xbox 360 exclusive Kingdoms can max out the console's capabilities before then.
"... I think when we put Crysis 2 out we will show a level that is, multiplatform-wise, maxing out, but we will look into with Microsoft how Kingdoms can push the Xbox 360 110 percent, to its limits," he said.
"When you're spending a multimillion budget only on the Xbox 360, that team will be able to crank out the last two or three percent left in the console. But I think that two or three percent will make the difference potentially between day and night that you cannot afford if you go multiplatform."
Yerli also expressed once more his belief that the current console generation is holding the PC back.
"Because of the lack of a new generation of consoles... inevitably the PC cycle is being held back. So the PC generation has to innovate in different areas where it can be faster and more user-friendly, different models like free-to-play communities, more online, more social and more browser gaming.
"These are areas that make gaming faster and more accessible for PC users. That isn't the case right now and I think they're areas where innovation can break through and reach gamers faster than on consoles."
Look for the full read on CVG in the coming days.

I think the 360 has reached its peak whereas the PS3 is just now hitting its stride. The PC is criminally under utilized and bad ports combined with multi-platform dumbing down is definitely pushing the PC gaming community into indie games, which isn't such a bad thing as there's a lot of creativity in indie games that you just don't see big publishers taking risks with.
It's no secret the biggest console is also the one with the least processing power. Not the wii... The wii is a toy for grannies and pre-schoolers.

I would go with that and be happy about it at the same time, I still feel that in the right hands all 3 consoles can be pushed further (yes even the Wii).
The Games we have to look forward to this year and next just show what familiarity with hardware specs can do if you compare Games loke Perfect Dark Zero to Bioshock Infinnity. Still, ill look forward to seeing what the next generation actually brings; disk based, cloud, 1080 and 60fps as standard, who knows, but as geeks we should be looking forward to it

I'd expect to see a new Wii and Xbox by 2013. I'm not so sure about the next PS though, I reckon we'll see that about a year later. I can't wait to see what format MS go with for the next Xbox though, I think it's safe to say it won't be dvd again, not unless they want every game to come on 10 discs.

A recent play of RDR and Vanquish on 360 has convinced me that we dont need a new gen just yet, they look fantastic
with even these games wowing me 5 years on, PC gaming is just a waste of money at the moment, all that hardware and console game are still wining best graphics awards like RDR and GOW3 the developers just have no need for that kind of hardware especially for potentially such little sales so the next gen wont start until the new consoles come out
but obivuosly you still get the blind upgraders, throwing money out of the window, I upgrade but only becasue of my 3D work and even the last upgradewas 2 years ago
I just replayed GOW3 which deservedly so won most of the best graphics awards of 2010, its looked better than anything on my PC and with 4/5 year old hardware?
if that doesnt tell you everything nothing will

Well maybe you should try comparing it on a up to date gaming PC, and ill tell you PC compared to console is alot different. You dont have Anti Ailiasing on consoles so you get jagged edges no HSBO no HDR no full Bloom no antistropic filtering. Believe me a PC gaming in 1080p looks miles better than a console game due to the things a PC card can do that a console cant, 3D is old news for PC gamers and along with that we have PhysX and Apex on PC, Mafia II and Black ops are 2 examples of something that looks a lot better on a PC than a console. Dont compare a new game with a 5 year old pc it makes no sense at all >_>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6z4dFM6Viw
If you watch you notice the edges are smoother, surfaces are more reflective, Textures are higher res ect. Please dont come on spouting that Consoles have better graphics when comparing with an old pc and not an up to date one. And dont say i know f**k all since i play it on PC, 360 with my gf's brother and i play it on Wii lol.

No one maximised ps3 or xbox but didn't this same guy say that crysis 2 squeezed every drop out of them machines? I expect the only thing to happen by 2013 is the idiots at crytek end up with out a job.

with move, kinect, 3ds, psp phone/ psp2 and the smart phone devices, theres just no point in a ps4 or next xbox yet, i doubt we will see next gen consoles for at least 5 years yet, maybe even more, you just cant continue to make massive leaps from 1 gen to the next forever, where do you go when graphics and sound are almost photo realistic, and storage media is as big as you need it to be because you install to hard drives? consoles and even pcs will have much longer life spans in the future, and even in the present, after all its games that are the big pay off for sony, microsoft and nintendo not the hardware, i think nintendo has the most to gain from an updated console but with wii sales being so strong why bother

I'm actually expecting some new consoles next year, Nintendo i think arn't doing so well with the wii anymore, so i think there going to bring out a new console, followed by Sony because if there really punting the psp2 to be as good as the ps3 whats the point in that, however i can see this not really happening with the way the market is right now, but i have to admit that the xbox and ps3 are going down in terms of how there looking, (doom 3 on ultra settings on pc is pretty similar to how ps3 and 360's look now a days) i think they've got all they can get out of them personally, i'd love to see some 720 or ps4 action next year though but i'm not expecting anything, i just feel its about time to get moving again.

The minute a console has hit the shelves, the R&D departments start work on the next one. Deep inside MS, Sony and Nintendo will be prototypes of the next-gen, continually being developed, upgraded and refined. The problem is, older gamers will remember the 5-year cycle and this being a relatively new industry, it's hitting maturity where unfortunately high finance and big business gets involved. In the usual cycle we would have started hearing about new machines last year and AAA releases would have tailed off in readiness of new hardware. No sign of that so far, in fact many publishers are still marketing 12 month-away games, not a typical sign that they are holding back because something else is in the works. I really hope we see some new consoles in 2013, but I've got a funny feeling nintendo will have a Wii successor on the shelves next year, something to compliment the 3DS in some way.

I would like to see better simulation of the environment - with BFBC2 and the destructable environment - more could be done with that - such as more granularity on making holes in the wall. movement of people and vehicles(tanks) etc., improved.
I have not really seen any developer state that they cannot improve the graphics considerably, or that the console is limiting specific game attributes such as graphics, simulation, sound etc.

gillri you need to do some research mate. pcs can produce visuals better than the consoles at the same price. i said it before and ill keep saying it. £250 is the current price of a ps3, that much will build you a pc that will let you play pretty much all games on high settings on at least 720p (the res ps3 games run at). that means for the same price you can get better looking games. plus the games on the pc are cheaper, especially the steam sales. you can use your pc with your massive 50inch tv in your living room and play on the sofa. its always the same arguments but their always redundant.

Having only had a PS3 for five months, I'm not in any rush to see it superseded. 99% of the time there's nothing between the 360 and PS3, and I don't really think the games on either look 'old' in terms of graphics. But I hate screen tear and I want absolute minimum 30fps and far too many games, on PS3 and 360, suffer from this. As CoD has shown, in order to get smooth gameplay you have to drop the res - no more compromise!
If I could buy some kind of £50 add on that just upped the framrates/minimised screen tear, I'd be on it like a shot. People who think performance is acceptable now could still play the games as they are, but this has been going on for ages. Resi 5 is two years old and it tore something chronic.
It would probably be unworkable and a bad move business wise, but I'd go for it - I've certainly got no desire to spend £300 or possibly even more, on a new console right now.

I think we will definately see a new wii by 2012. New xbox in 2013, and PS4 in 2015.
To be honest, I'm still prietty happy with my 360, so not in any great rush for a new console just yet, especially when I see games like Crysis 2. I have the 3DS coming along which I'm looking forward too, and, depending on what games come out, a PSP2; if of course it is a reasonable price and the games are great.

2013 sounds right for the Nintendo to launch there next one,but imo i think 2015 for both the big guys to come out slugging it out in the same year together.None of this one one year the next next year stuff,Both the big hitters with exclusive titles to try and out do the other.

There may well be hardly anything between the 360 and PS3 but they both lack the power to support 1080p games at 60fps (especially in 3D). I am not saying that it is necessary for a good gaming experience but many consumers own TV's now that surpass what these consoles are capable of.
I don't think that a long console lifespan is a clever idea. Sony are insane with their ten year life-span ideal. That is a scary length of time in electronics. I don't know what Microsoft are thinking with Kinect either - why do they want to extend the life of the 360 another 5 years? I hope they get their next console out faster. It can still come with Kinect...
Otherwise it just ends up with a lot of time and money being thrown at jumping through ever decreasing hoops in a bid to squeeze out every last drop of power - when that time could be better spent remaking the game on a machine where the resources are abundant ... like a PC perhaps lol
woodins on 25 Jan '11 said:
My thoughts exactly. Couldn't have put it better. Never mind the "hidden potential" that everyone has been harking on about for the past 4yrs that is supposedly lurking somewhere underneath the PS3, Sony still havent got it under that sub £200 "sweet spot" with a brilliant exclusive bundled yet. Once they do that, they will make even more of a sales impact than what the 360 did this xmas with its sales renaissance.
Most devs aside from Crytek dont really want a new gen for the next few years anyway. The costs of making a current gen game are astronomical as it is, they are just about making a reasonable return on all the infrastructure and software they have had to license/build in order to get this gen going. All the over-extended mergers from 2008, and the subsequent downsizing from last year are just starting to take effect. Its in Crytek's interest to beat their drum over getting new hardware to play with and for PC owners to start chasing the hardware dragon like in the good old days. Dont want to start a flame war, but Crysis wasnt that good a game - Just like Far Cry. Its like my ex-girlfriend - looks gorgeous, gives the illusion of depth and replayabilty with its "open expanses" but really has nothing going for it. Crytek make games that look good running on expensive TV's in PC World at thats it.
And what will we have with these new consoles apart from the obvious gfx and HD space? Inbuilt Move/Kinect? Okay . . . . . If we must. 3D TV? Not yet. We have all just shelled out for those reasonably priced HDTV's hanging on the wall - and call me a traditionalist, but people still buy a TV and expect it to last a few years, unlike our laptops, phones etc. Its gonna be a tough couple of years out there for your average gamer (most gamers dont spend their free time posting on gaming boards) and asking them to pay £300 + for a new system is a big ask. Just ask Sony how that went down the last time - And that was when the economy was good.
flash501 on 25 Jan '11 said:
Maybe, maybe not. The 3DS is being released at a price similar to what the 360 was at launch and I bet it sells like hotcakes. As long as they are not priced ridiculously high, which is a possibility I suppose, then I don't think the economic downturn will have a massive impact on sales.

I don't know about anybody else but considering how old the current gen is I wouldn't want it to go on for another 5 years (like Microsoft wants). I think that Microsoft would have released a new console by now but because of the RROD repair costs, the recession and the rise of cloud computing I doubt that we will see anything new from Microsoft and Sony.
Jon Ahmad on 25 Jan '11 said:
I think the prediction is about right. The current consoles are doing great and as more developers are learning how to 'write to the metal', the output can only get better. I'll never forget how Microsoft dropped the original Xbox like a brick as soon as the 360 was announced. Sony capitalised on this and went on to squeeze a lot more juice out of the PS2, thus gaining even greater market share. The original Xbox had a lot of power under its bonnet but thanks to MS, this was never exploited properly. Timing is the single most important aspect when a company releases a new console, and I think the big three have learned a lot of lessons from the past. Anybody can rant and rave about power and I'm talking from the Sinclair Spectrum days when the SAM Coupe was announced back then but failed to gain a foothold in the market due to poor timing. Anyway, let's all enjoy the technology that we have at the moment and let the Big Boys worry about what and when to give us our next fix. When that is, surely, it can oly be a good thing.
g_marrs on 25 Jan '11 said:
Translation: We thought consoles would be way more powerful by now when designing our next game. Basically, we're brown-trousering it at the moment because if a new format isn't out by 2013 we're in deep sh... trouble.

Won't see me buying another console for at least 5 years (unless something happens to my ps3)
I mainly use it for a media player (Anime\tv shows\movies,ect) and the occasional game that I'm interested in i'll rent from gamefly.
But spending another 400+ dollars on a console in the next 2 years? Ridiculous.
I can see the 360 fanboys doing it, because lets face it they have to buy a new console every 6 months due to rrod or some other f**k up from MS.
I have all 3 systems, but i don't play the wii because 99% of the games that are released use the wii's tacky and inaccurate controls, and the 360 well i have an older one that sounds like it's a 20" fan.

2015 would be fine for me, and realistically sony have put a dvd player in the playstation 2 when they where popular and a blue ray in the ps3 now. What is going in the ps4?
Anyone wanting a new console is greedy and unrealistic other than wii 2, as much as i love Nintendo they do need to upgrade due to graphics, internal memory, and online support.

Yerli suggests that theoretically Crysis 2 will be seen as maxed out multiplatform-wise for this current generation. He says nothing about maximising a console. He talks about an exclusive Xbox 360 title called "Kingdoms" that Crytek are working in collaboration with Microsoft that will be showing the Xbox 360 pretty much at it's limits and suggesting it's much easier with the big budget for single platform development.
