Sony said this morning that it sold 6.3 million PS3s during the three months ended December 31, taking lifetime sales to 47.9 million.
That's just behind its main rival. Microsoft also sold 6.3 million Xbox 360s during the holiday quarter, taking the system's lifetime total to 50.9 million.
While Nintendo has seen a drop in console adoption in recent times, lifetime Wii sales stood at 84.6 million as of December 31.

Besides which, given the length of the warranty I doubt there's too many people who had to repurchase their 360 after getting the RROD. The new chipset models were released well inside the 3 year warranty period after launch.

Nintendo were in dire straits last gen, so really needed to push some good numbers this gen & they certainly did that. Sony were far too arrogant after being the lead console last gen & with their ridiculous pricing, really needed to be taken down a peg or two. And finally there's Microsoft cruising along in the middle somewhere, that didn't deserve massive sales, but didn't need any kind of reality check either.
Next gen will be good.

Wii has sold well and PS3 and 360 continue to sell well so its good news all around. Looking at those numbers it seems PS3 would be just infront of 360 if Sony and MS released their consoles in the same year but they didn't and hey ho PS3 is in third place behind 360 and Wii. If Sony are smart they'll learn from their mistakes for the PS4.

The biggest failure here is of course that the PS3 still hasn't overtaken the 360 given the huge level of sales the PS2 racked up in it's lifetime... not forgetting of course that that number itself was inflated by people buying replacement machines when they got DRE's or the machine just dies of old age... I'm on my 3rd PS2, and 2nd 360 in roughly the same time frame.
