Europe Killzone 3 beta released as US has to wait

Sony unleashes The Helghast

Sony's Killzone 3 multiplayer beta has gone live for all online PS3 owners in Europe - but won't be available to play in North America until later today.

The EU beta, which was previously only available for PS Plus subscribers, went live at 11am this morning and will be hosted until February 15.

EU players can access modes including 'Guerrilla Warfare', with 16-player support in team deathmatches and 'Warzone', which supports up to to 24 players.

There's also 'Operations' which offers mini-missions for 16 players and 'Botzone' - an offline mode in which players shoot AI enemies on the Frozen Dam map.

The US version of the beta will arrive at 10am PST - 6pm UK time. To make it up to our North American cousins, Guerrilla has promised to give away 60 copies of the Killzone 3 Limited Helghast edition to lucky US gamers who take part in the open beta this weekend.

I've put a hour into it so far, it's better than Killzone 2 in terms of accessibility. The controls are more responsive, dare I say more like COD. Melee is a lot better than I expected. And it takes fewer bullets to drop enemies I think. Graphics are improved, it's a great looking game. I think the best thing is the sound, it's the best sound I've ever heard in a FPS.

But it's still Killzone and it's not going to convert anyone if they didn't like the previous games. I think they could have put in a few more new ideas in the multiplayer, it's all very deja vu. And COD gets knocked for that, and I think this should too. It feels like you're playing Killzone 2 on new maps. I wanted a bit more of a jump, not just Killzone 2.5

I think you'll find its PSN that sucks. I found LIVE much faster when downloading demos etc.

    PSN donwloads can take forever!

Took me 20 mins to download. It's great. Much better than KZ2, still has the weighty feel but it also feels smoother. Controls are more responsive, you can run and aim quicker. There are killstreaks but unlike CoD where you drop a nuke or release the hounds its simple and subtle things like faster aiming or faster reloading. Dont let the "its like CoD" comment above put you off, if anything it feels more like Battlefield Bad Company 2 this time around. The only thing I would say is similar to CoD is Killzone 3 has Battle points to unlock stuff, like Blops has CoD points but unlike CoD where a lot of unlockable stuff is just for show Killzone 3 Battle points let you unlock abilities and then let you upgrade them providing a deeper experience which actually affects the gameplay.

Its not perfect though as shotguns are still overpowed as they were in Killzone 2.

Downloaded it, played it, like it. And since my PS3 phat died and I got a slim I've been getting much better download speeds. It only took me 20 minutes to download but if I had done this on my phat it would of taken hours.

Well , I got into one game and was trying to get used to buttons, left game as had to something to do , and never got back in since, from my brief experience , colour me unimpressed , I'll give it another go later.

    Ppl chat bs , I have 360 and ps3 and I downloaded a 2gb file for bc2 in 30 min flat.kz3 was less than 10 mins.
I get slower download speeds on live for demos, crysis 2 which was 1.2 gb took an hour.
The difference between live and psn is features not performance.

    crysis 2 demo is 1.8GB

Wasn't really a fan of Killzone 2, but I'm quite enjoying this demo. My internet went down just after I installed it so I had to play against bots, but I'm having a lot of fun. I might buy the full game. I don't know. Would be another game to play in split-screen with my brother I guess.

And the weapon sounds are fookin' great!

Also not be able to get online with it so have to try later but bot matches have been good. Some battles are frantic if you notch the level up.

They have been having problems with the servers which explains why some people have managed to get into games, leave and not be able to rejoin. They expect similar periods of down time until they can resolve the issue. If you are having problems give it a while and come back to it. As of now it is working. They are keeping everyone upto date on the official forums.

    Rubbish. It's internet connection.

Having no issues getting game now , but still not overly impressed . Just seems kinda blah to me
Nothing to set it apart at all.
If crysis two was 1.8gb I apologise I was wrong, must have been bulletstorm that was 1.2.
Still took longer than my 1.8gb patch on psn by far though.
Dunno would play this game, but bc2 still superior and homefront seems more imaginative, but on Plus side frame rate is good, lag is non existent or minimal, and controls are responsive, although melee sucks a bit.
Still playing it half hour or so later, so can't be too bad, and seems more polished than crysis 2, just not very exciting

What is imaginative about Homefront (multiplayer)?

Seriously. Everything I've read is just saying it borrows from CoD & Battlefield.

  19. kirankara on 3 Feb '11 said:

No doubt it does borrow heavily, But seems like there's more ideas put in it, but we will see. kz3 seems just Cod plus bc2, but the maps on bc2 are better and controls better on cod. IMO anyway.
Kz3 is a solid shooter, just not exceptional to me.

had the same, but you have to press "X" again to advance to the next screen. Think its missing text on the screen.

Couple hrs in and enjoying this lot more, someone can explain how kill streaks work though would be nice. Took me while to figure some things out and had to change to alternate buttons as the original ones just werent doing it for me. Still think melee is kinda hit and miss, as it seems to have to enter a cut scene scenario to implement it, and u can have pressed it and nothing happens then your getting your eyes poked out, so seems they've already pressed it, either that or it's lag, but haven't spotted any elsewhere in game.
Games grown on me substantially in last few hrs, but still don't think it's standout amazing, just very good.
