Sony's PlayStation Phone releasing in April

Orange and T-Mobile finger UK release date

The UK release date of Sony's 'PlayStation Phone', the Xperia Play, will arrive in April.

That's according to leading network providers Orange and T-Mobile.

Both companies have today gone on the record to confirm that the phone will hit shelves in the month.

The news, broken by tech site Pocket Lint, comes as both O2 and Vodafone confirm that they will be stocking the handset.

Although UK operator Three is yet to commit to Xperia Play, it did tell the site that it was "very excited" by Sony's announcement.

The Xperia Play got an official world première during the US Superbowl football extravaganza last night.

The Xperia Play will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress on Sunday 13 February at around 6pm GMT. It will carry the PlayStation Suite, Sony's new gaming content App for Android mobiles.

It'll most likely be free on a 24 month contract and around £350 PAYG. Specs are pretty much the same as most high end Android phones at the moment. As far as I'm aware it doesn't have any specialised graphics processors or anything in it. The only thing thats different is the extra game controller buttons, so I doubt it'll be much more expensive.

Don;t really see much point in this.

If there was a PS Phone what had specs like the PSP2 and had phone as well then awesome but this is just a PSP Go with phone.

Its not even that. It has no PSP functionality at all. That's why you don't see the PSP logo on it anywhere.
Its just an Android smartphone with playstation controls on it. Sony will probably release a range of software that is optimised for it. Probably a few PSone conversions too, but I doubt it'll be powerful enough to run PSP games smoothly.

I think this will fail to be honest.

i think this is really cool. a smart phone with playstation controls whats not to like about that? touchscreen controls have been the major drawback for games on smart phones so far but this is gonna change that. specs arent everything and if sony support this well with a classic back catalogue then imo its gonna be sweet. i think i might actually be more excited about this than the psp2 because its a phone as well so ill probably end up playing more on it than a dedicated portable games console.

This is my thinking as well. It has Android running on it for starters so it's better than my iphone. I consider the iphone to be my current favourite phone on the market and I didn't think I would bother getting a different sort of phone ever again tbh. 3gs jailbroken = loads of win.

But this phone has a proper control pad, its as powerful as any other phone on the market, it runs android its a win win situation really. And PS1 games emulation 8)

Also I really didn't see a need for a PS phone at 1st and was here slatting Sony for bringing one out. But when you think about it, it makes a whole lot of sense.

Like whats up with people now a days? Why is it that you assume that sony is the best company in the world? The thing is just a phone it isn't a handheld device so calm down and stop bitching over that damn device, if you dont like it fine if you do great but damn you people need to shut up.

I really don't think it will. I'm not the sort of person that's usually bothered about playing handhelds. I certainly wouldn't spend the sort of money they'll be wanting for the NGP or 3DS. But when I need a new phone I may well consider this one. I like Sony Ericsson phones and I love the Android OS. It'd be great for just playing quick games on the bus/train/toilet etc. That's who I think this is supposed to be targeted at.
Also I reckon Sony knows it'll be really popular for use with all the retro console emulators that you can get on Android. They'd never admit it as they're supposed to be against any kind of emulation, but I know that's what I'd buy it for.
People who are really into the handhelds will skip this and go straight to the proper systems. For everyone else this will be an entertaining bonus on their new mobile.

I was quite excited by the prospect of this device when all the early buzz was coming out over the last few months, but for me at least, the big NGP reveal has totally stolen it's thunder. I personally can't really justify buying both, even a year or so apart, and frankly for me the Awesomeness of the NGP wins by a country mile.

Shame really, cos it would be great to have a phone that offered a true playstation-lite gaming experience. However, Im so used to my blackberry that I'd hate to have to adjust to typing on a virtual keyboard anyway, so maybe it's all for the best really.

Agreed. I have to admit, I was very skeptical of it at first, but considering I will be able to use it with the tons of emulators already available, it actually seems quite attractive all of a sudden. IT would be nice if they released it without any Sonyware version of Android, but this just won't happen though. Looks like a custom hack will be needed.

Shame the specs are very average but if that puts it around then £350 mark then maybe it was a good idea. North of that and they are really having a laugh. Even if it is cheap I don't know if I want a device that's only slightly faster than my current Nexus one. Will see how they price it and how it feels in the hand.
Oh and it seriously better come with more than 512MB storage! Moving apps to SD card has gotten better the last 4 months but it's still a very small amount of memory and gets eaten up quite fast.

I prefer to keep my phone and gaming separate to be honest. Until they produce a phone that can play decent games for 4-5 hours before a recharge I'm out. iPhone can only handle 50mins on a game with 3D graphics. Hardly a good gaming machine.
