NPD: Xbox 360 tops console sales in January

Microsoft starts 2011 on a high; Sony and Nintendo quiet on sales figures

Xbox 360 was the top selling console in the US in January, according to NPD data provided by Microsoft.

Xbox 360 Screenshot
"Sustained consumer demand for Kinect helped propel Xbox 360" to 381,000 sales, up 48,000 over January 2010, the platform holder said in a statement.

Microsoft also said NPD data showed total retail spend on Xbox 360 exceeded $551 million in January, making it the No.1 selling console platform for the tenth month in a row.

"Some lingering supply constraints coupled with high consumer demand led to continued pockets of shortages at retail," the firm claimed.

"Microsoft anticipates this trend to improve through February, but will continue to work with retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments."

Sony and Nintendo have yet to release any monthly platform sales figures, but we'll update this story if the numbers are made available.

Call of Duty: Black Ops was the No.1 game in January, while Dead Space 2, LittleBigPlanet 2 and DC Universe Online debuted on the software top ten chart.

I love it when they announce sales like it matters anymore. What are we expecting from this news. What, 360 outsells ps3 for a month in america, so Sony cancel PS3 production? No, that would be ridiculous. There are no winners in this industry, since as soon as one console starts losing sales, the company brings out the next gen console. Then other companies follow in their footsteps. It's a big endless cycle. All these announcments do is bring out the fanboys.

I feel a "Lol, sony fagz" is only round the corner, I'm getting the hell out of here.

6.9 million, i actually counted them myself when they got out the shops so you have to believe it. One was a bloke coming out of Greggs with a sausage roll but i remembered to take him off the list.

If Sony released the same time as MS then Sony's overall sales would be ahead by roughly 10 million. So if you take a year sales from the 360 which is an average of just under 10 million, (5 years and 50 million sold) that would put MS at 40 million and Sony at 49 million. I suppose someone will say that is wrong but... it isn't.

I've contributed to both as I've had more than one of each (2 PS3's + 4 360's) but I just don't get 360 only owning fanboys when they say, ha Xbox has sold more than PS3 so... It doesn't take a genius to see in reality PS3 has sold more minus the year head start MS had.

I can't stand Sony fanboys or Xbox fanboys that claim to have both consoles to convince, their self? other people? that they're not a fanboy. Sony fanboys will claim there 360 is collecting dust and 360 fanboys claim they only use there PS3 for a Blu-ray.

I am actually using my 360 as a DVD player atm as mine has broke so I'd rather the 360 disc drive break as it has less time on the warranty.

I could be wrong, but the 360 only had a years head start over the european market, the jap and US market releases were far sooner.

Your "logic" is quite flawed. Why would you calculate the 360's average yearly sales to calculate 360's first year sales? That makes no sense. 360 had sold 7 million units by the time PS3 launched.
If the PS3 had gone on sale at the same time as the 360 it would have to have been even more expensive than it was at the time it actually launched, and the fanboy's claims that "PS3 has no games" would actually have been quite true. There can be no doubt that this would have severely affected sales numbers.
Sure, the PS3 has closed that 7 million gap to about 4 million, but with the outstanding success of Kinect, we may see this gap open up again. The fact still remains that Sony have gone from the clear market leader for two generations, to last place.
And, to date, Sony are the only console manufacturer that have actually removed functionality (Other OS) from customer's already purchased machines. Maybe you don't care about the removal of the Other OS feature, but there are many who do, and it shows a serious lack of consideration on Sony's part for their customers, as well as setting a worrying precedent. This behaviour has certainly cost Sony some potential sales.
I sound like a 360 fanboy now, don't I. Well, maybe I can balance that out by saying that, although I do pay for Xbox Live, I'd rather not have to, and I'm unhappy with Microsoft's licensing arrangement for controllers. I'd love to be able to use my Logitech steering wheel with my 360 without having to use an expensive adapter.

Morrisons do a very nice Linconshire sausage roll, you get it cold and have to stick it in the oven for a few minutes but it is lovely, if you can't get to a Stephens bakers for a steak bridie that is.

Oh yeh like it, like it, id just calmed down , id played the diplomat with the franks and beans earlier , gone and had my root canal treatment (which was really bloody enjoyable i tell you) , come back to browse the forums then suddenly, silver ownz comes on stoking the eternal flames of sausage roll and pastry/pie fan boy hatred , and then Quelle surprise! (thats french by the way) we get this thinly veiled taunt from ensabahnur, you know playing all nice , saying yeh you go down Morrisons (formally safeway) , get yourself a nice Linconshire sausage roll , its very nice , you know .....nice, which basically translates (and i don't think im reading too much into this) ,as "Yehh enjoy your mass produced anemic e number filled sausage roll you purchased from a supermarket you southern t**t, i'll be eating a bloody enormous steak Bridie with so much juicy meat in it , one mouthfull is technically enough to feed a family of four, very very sorry super c**t, hahahahaha" thats what that translates as!!!!!

Got it in one!! (but those Linconshire sausage rolls are nice btw) Though on fridays its always curry for lunch up here, chicken chaat followed by chicken tikka karahi bhoona. Mmmm loverly.

Well it couldn't hurt asking the local chippy or bakers if they offer it. Saying that though what would happen if one said yes, winked, and said go round back in 15 minutes

I think this thread has gone a bit off track if im honest , however was thinking i wonder why no one IE Greggs bakers , forfars bakery, Morrisons , well i wonder why no one makes sausage rolls one fiftieth of the normal size, so say approximately the size of baked beans , thus facilitating the purchase of a quarter of sausage rolls (like in an old sweet shop) , sounds sensible to me

Well i think you have to go to a specialist sweet shop to buy quarter bags nowadays so maybe some sort of specialist bakers could make those sausage rolls. Either that or you'll just have to make do with the party size sausage rolls, which for some reason people like to stick on cocktail sticks with lumps of cheese or pineapple.

But for the love of god don't post any more s**t on horse semen shots, can hardly even stomach a coffee just now.

You obviously cared about it, as you commented on the article. Judging by your response, you are a bit disgruntled….?

Erm no, i was just expressing my opinion on US sales... Why would i be disgruntled?

I only came back because i thought a fanboy war had broken out with all the comments. Just a lot of pies etc.

I think that's the most stupid arguement/comparison i've ever seen on this website.

I find it funnier that even if the sales of 360's have been boosted by say 5 or 6 million people buying a second (or third, or fourth) to replace a busted console... that's 5 or 6 million people who would still buy a notoriously dodgy product than buy a PS3 at all.

NPD also reported that Microsoft sold over 2,6 million Kinect's for XBOX 360 over weekend. Just imagine how much it that!!! BTW, you can find some interesting news about Microsofts new Kinect on http://xboxkinecthub.com

Which makes me more of a reliable person, when it comes to commenting on both platforms, compared to yourself.
