Sony: Profitability more important than overtaking Xbox 360

Platform holder taking the 'Nintendo approach' to business

Sony is more concerned with profitability than with PS3 surpassing Xbox 360 sales.

That's according to PlayStation software brand manager Scott McCarthy, who told IndustryGamers that Sony is following the Nintendo approach to business, rather than focusing too much on what the competition is up to.

"So do we pass Xbox 360? At the moment, I think we're trying to just keep up with inventory and trying to move as many units as we can through the channel," he said.

"It's also one of those things where, do we notice what Microsoft is doing? Obviously, they are our competition. But is it like we surpass Microsoft or we fail? No. Our goal is to be profitable and we're going to achieve that this year and do even better next year.

"That's been Nintendo's position for years," he added. "We have a very aggressive plan this year. And when we're profitable we're happy. If we happen to close the gap with Microsoft in the meantime, then that's good too."

As of December 31, 2010, lifetime PS3 sales stood at 47.9 million units, just three million behind Xbox 360's total.

Sony is reportedly developing a new hack-proof PS3 model that isn't susceptible to recent system security exploits, and planning to lower the price of existing models.

Is this sony finally admitting that they are no longer market leaders and that microsoft might actually be genuine competition, very humble.

Great times for us all to finally have two consoles so close in sales fighting for our money.

The only thing stopping me getting a PS3 is the price. I've got a family and £200 is very hard to come by in this hard time so dropping the price would really appeal to me. As for profitability that should be their number one priority. Why make a console if a year down the line your shutting your doors. Well done Sony. You get kudos from me for that.

I don't understand why they would be so fussed about passing xbox360 sales anyway, it won't achieve anything it's not like they'll get a award for doing it. At the end of the day the only reason why 360 is in front is because of the American Market and they'll never get the pa3 to sell more there never. they should be happy that elsewhere in the world ps3 sells more.

Sony should just keep doing what there doing, I'm happy with the Massive amount of games on offer and the huge amout coming out. IMO it's the best console to own now (it wasn't for te first 2 years). Psn offers loads of services and all free, like BBC inplayer, itv player, 4 ondemand, LOVEFILM, there own movie rental service, plus the psn store and the music video store and It's getting steam. Sony should just do what there doing forget the about suppassing 360 it means nothing.

There are actually many many more RROD units than 3 million, but as others have correctly pointed out to me, a large proportion of those will be covered by warranty and will have been repaired. Theres probably more like a million or so that had to be replaced out of warranty and therefore represent a new unit shipped.

way more than that and also the repurchases for bricked systems.
the same also happened with ps3 but on a smaller scale with YLOD but i think a lot of ppl will be repurchasing ps3's if the anti-ban hack fails (not sure on the situation of that)
and considering xbox always undercuts ps3 (will probably do the same next price drop), i think its doing really well and people do appreciate all the exclusives.

LOL,i have had RRoD 3 times,E74 error and disc tray break on me,and i still only paid for the 360 once on launch day

however for me at least they seem to be on top of the problem now,as the last time i had anything wrong with the 360 was April 2008(yup,a week before GTA4 came out...but i got the 360 back within the week!!),and i play on the thing every day

Playstation 3 i got a month or two after launch and i got a problem a few months later whereas after i downloaded the recent update i could not play any discs of any kind,so i had to reformat the HDD and then redownload the update and things have been fine since, but of course i am still seeing a lot of threads on the Playstation forums about the YLOD,and as my PS3 is a 60 gig Backwards compatible PS3 i am guessing my PS3 is living on borrowed time :(

the Wii which again i bought on launch day,i had some problems with, especially when trying to access the Wii store,it would usually freeze alot, and i would have to restart the machine..not sure if they have fixed that problem,or if it was just a problem i was getting as i sold it after i realised i hadn't played on the machine for nearly 2 years

so all in all, this Gen at least for me,have all had their problems, thankfully, hopefully they are all on top of these problems now

I went with my sister to get her a b/f a 360 at xmas, she came round tonight for me to set her Netbook up and told me he has had 4 rrod since xmas! I wouldn't be surprised if it happened once or twice but 4 times :!: :!:

I've got to say after getting RROD 3 times my self in two years I've not had any problems with my Elite at all. For PS3 I have had one fail in two years but tbh I think it was update 3.56 that caused it because it was fine before that.

The xbox is a better system than ps 3 anyway. sure i enjoyed the uncharted games, heavy and yakuza 3 on my ps 3 but on xbox i have the likes of halo reach, gears, left 4 dead, splinter cell conviction to play. Also xbox is the place to play both mass effect games because the first game should not be missed out on looking forward to the 3rd game. I see ps 3 fanboys are obsessing over rrod again at least microsoft fix that for free. ps 3 had ylod fault .

They have been making a profit from every unit sold as of June 2010

Halo, Gears, L4D, Conviction and not forgetting Metro 2033 are the only really decent exclusives for the 360 IMO. The 360 exclusive library lacks the genre variation of the PS3's, you know LBP1+2, Uncharted, Demons Souls, GT5, Killzone 3, Rachet & Clank, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Infamous. I'm not going to start reeling off this years exclusive pickings for the two consoles as I can't think of them all off the top of my head, 360 has Gears 3 and Forza 4 though, I can remember them two noteworthy titles.
