Shipments of Sony's PS3 to Europe are currently being blocked by customs, after the platform holder lost a legal battle with electronics rival LG.
The Hague court has ordered the temporary confiscation of all PS3 units shipped to UK and Europe for at least 10 days. Tens of thousands of PS3 have already been seized by customs in the Netherlands, according to the Guardian.
Sony ships around 100,000 units to the effected region each week. Most retailers will apparently have enough PS3 units to last two to three weeks, but if LG should succeed in having the injunction extended the affects of the ban could make Sony's console very hard to come by come late next month.
Sony is reportedly "frantically" pursuing a lift on the ban, and has the right to appeal to the European patents office.
LG called for an investigation earlier this month into the alleged infringements spanning seven patents concerning PS3s and Sony's Bravia TVs, seeking a "permanent exclusion order ... excluding entry into the United States" of the PS3.
If Sony loses the battle it could be ordered to pay hundreds of millions of pounds in compensation to LG for every PS3 sold worldwide.

Think about it, how can LG claim in 2011 that Sony, one of the creators of Blu-Ray have broken patent laws by including Blu-Ray in the PS3 without LG knowing?
We all knew Blu-Ray was part of the PS3 in 2006 so how can LG claim that they didn't know Sony was putting it in each PS3?
The patent is about how the PS3 deals with multiple data streams from the Blu-Ray drive, but why did LG not issue this patent ban back in 2006 when the PS3 was released?
The whole thing stinks. It's like patenting a touch screen device in 1980 and then trying to sue apple for the iPhone 4 now.

People forget that Sony was a HD-DVD partner as well originally. They ran away from it when the rest wouldn't adopt their, ahem, suggestions. Blu-Ray appeared then very rapidly overnight (although it didn't sport a new high def codec, instead using the old MPeg2 (the reason why blu-rays had to be bigger than hd-dvds).
So it's perfectly conceivable that LG and other companies have sat on their best cards until needed. Sony in December made patent claims against LG phones. Thus LG has played its' Ace.
The thing is it that an action has been applied this time. This step elevates to much more significant issue. This can only happen if the Court of Justice rules that Sony DOES have a case to answer, i.e. they've decided patent theft to be very likely.
What this means for the near future is anyones' guess. I'd suggest that it'll be more a case of "You drop your claim and I'll drop mine." Then again. Sony really has peaved off a lot of the original HD-DVD group and paybacks a female dog.

Sony ripped off the "dualshock" rumble technology from Immersion back in 2002. They eventually had to pay out a total of just over $150,000,000 as well as paying royalties for every single Playstation controller that was sold since then. That's why the PS3 controllers originally had no rumble technology and didn't feature the Dualshock branding.
Microsoft were also sued but settled out of court by buying 10% of Immersion. Sony fought the case, lost and spent a LOT more money than Microsoft had to
That was a case that started 9 years ago and Sony are still paying for it today. Its not unreasonable to think that the same thing could happen with LG.
Maybe its time Sony started developing their own technology?

Often what happens in these cases is that if someone infringes a patent, the patent holder allows them to continue thier activities in a 'gentlemans agreement sort of way' as the tech is beneficial to the market. If the company who infringed the patent starts to weild thier legal power around another issue, in this case the LG phones, the original patent holder switches from allowing them to use thier patented tech to a cease and desist.
This happens more in the mobile phone world, apple and Nokia duked it out a few years ago as Nokia own the patents to most mobile tech we take for granted now, Apple and HTC are currently sueing eachother for various patent infringements

1. Opened themselves to a class action boycott by existing Playstation 3 Customers and there own Customers with Playstation 3's. This means that all these people will form groups which will go to websites, stores etc selling LG products and warn other people what LG has done to the Playstation 3 owners by having there units confiscated and delivery stopped threw no fault of there own. That will drive those customers away from the LG brand and will also stop them buying LG products.
2.Placed themselves in a position where the media can now have a field day with this and once those stories are aired there is a high risk of those story’s going viral with video sharing websites such as youtube,dailymotion etc. With millions of people seeing that LG are going to suffer heavy losses.
3.Caused there business to lose a massive amount of revenue and profits and if this escalates to far to the point where people are fed up which there is little chance of this happening then they are going to find themselves in deep financial trouble or worse.
4.Face the possibility of a lawsuit from Playstation 3 fans for causing them loses of the Playstation 3 consoles and even some from other businesses for loss of revenue.
Its not just Sony at fault. LG have really dropped the ball here. Lets wait and see what kicks off

Especially considering that LG hasn't confiscated any owner's machine. It's the COurt of Justice that is preventing any more units being imported into Europe temporarily. At the end of the day, why should LG suffer if their technology has been stolen?

Just remember, the immersion case demonstrates which company has a proven history of patent theft.

Actually LG are bigger than Sony in terms of profit anyway, so if LG 'fans' ( if the exist) got up an arms about Sony f**king them over (not saying they have), they're probably larger in number anyway. Although I doubt as fanatical. Although I doubt TV owners are quite the same as the console owners.
This is two massive companies squabbling over some patents/tech. Gaz makes it sound like it's Egypt/Libya etc!
