Anyone else feel the JRPG has lost some of its bite? Was a time once when you wouldn't dare call yourself a JRPG unless you left a trail of broken, weeping gamers in your wake. The likes of Dragon Quest IX and Pokemon Whatever/Whatever are too soft, too accommodating. Thank the gaming lords then, for Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, a game that appreciates the cruelty of the old ways. You can also thank the competition lords, for they have a copy to give away.
While The 4 Heroes of Light won't brutalise you, it does refuse to nanny like so many modern offerings. Adhering to 'work it out for yourself' school of thought, its lack of clear objectives and horrible difficulty spikes force intense engagement with the world. Proved a little too much for our Matthew (he gave it a grumpy 55%); then again, so does opening jam jars, so he's clearly not to be trusted. Either way, the game is sure to last you a while.
Fancy pitting your modern day wits against some old school design? You need only answer the question below. As per usual, the competition closes midnight on Thursday to allow a winner to be picked on Friday, so the game can arrive on Saturday. Yes, you too could have liquid woe streaming from your eyes in but 72 hours. Just answer this question:
Which of these mystery-solving gangs was not invented by children's author Enid Blyton?
A) The Famous Five
B) The So-So Six
C) The Secret Seven
Know the answer? Text NGHEROES followed by a space then your answer (A, B or C), then another space and your full name and address to 87474. Texts cost a mere 25p plus your standard network rate.
