EA: Mirror's Edge 2 must grow franchise audience

"We're figuring out how to bring it back," says publisher's games chief

EA has told CVG that not only is DICE's Mirror's Edge franchise very much still alive - but that it is "figuring out a way to bring it back".

However, the publisher will not green light a new project in the series until it can be confident that any sequel will comfortably outsell the first game.

First-person free running romp Mirror's Edge was released in 2008 to critical acclaim, but struggled to meet EA's sales expectations.

Reports emerging last month suggested that the publisher had put the brakes on any plans for a second game in the series.

However, when asked if EA had given up on expanding franchise, the firm's Games label chief Frank Gibeau told CVG:

"Not at all. We're just trying to figure out how to bring Mirror's Edge back and in what way. That's part of the creative development process.

"I know there are some stories about how EA killed Mirror's Edge. Well, I'm the guy; I greenlight the games. I did not kill it - as God is my witness.

"What we said internally is: 'What do we need to do to make [a sequel] a hit?' We need to go from version one to version two so that it sells two to three times as many, it finds a much bigger audience. The first game from a quality standpoint was good, but now it needs to be great.

"We're actively working on ideas in the Mirror's Edge universe, we just haven't locked yet on a way to bring it back and a way that fans will be excited, but at the same time we can get it to a bigger audience."

Last year, EA has brought Mirror's Edge to iPad as part of its initial range for the Apple device.

Hub worlds don't always work, but I think Mirror's Edge 2 would be brilliant if you had to free-roam your way between levels.

    Write that down.

I would be willing to part with my hard-earned cash and purchase a follow-up to Mirror's Edge. Although not having played the original game, I support talented IP and EA have a host of great IP lined-up this year.

Simple EA no soddy combat it really made the game fall flat on its face quick.

And make the game free roam, yes we need checkpoints or objectives but give us different ways to get their and acheive it.

Games with girls as the lead character sell half as well (apart from Tomb Raider) than those with a male character. So it's simple Ea, make a straight sequel and give that chick a dick.

    Gawd damnit Alt!
You have now got me back into listening Lisa Miskovsky on repeat again (Still Alive song artist).

Used to listen to her nonstop in 08, *sigh*

Maybe tone down the white and introduce other not so vibrant colours? I'm sure sales would pick up for Mirror's Edge 2 that way. I couldn't complete Mirror's Edge because my eyes were burnt out of my skull.

Quiet you! The game stands out and is frankly gorgeous at high res with lots of AA on. Really striking.

The EA guy is talking sensibly. Can't really argue with him. They need to get the ip to become more noticed before they release a new game. Hopefully they are working hard on it will be 2 years max before we see a new game.

Agreed. The pristine white city brilliantly portrays the false, distopian paradise that it's meant to be. It's vivid and beautiful, and I'd be very annoyed if they significantly changed the art styling.

I concur with Runadumb and Altitude. Mirror's Edge 1 pristine and crisp colour scheme really set it apart from so many other games - personally I found it to be a breath of fresh air, and made the moments where you are happily getting to grips with the free-style jumping and leaping a real joy. I'm pleased to hear that Mirror's Edge 2 has not be scrapped at present time.

    Hey EA,

I'm that turkish guy who wrote you a fancy letter about "mirror's edge 2". Thank you so much for this news. You've just made my day. This is like directly addressing my letter to DICE. I hope some peeps from DICE or EA is following here. But i'd still want that my fav. game studio would reply to my letter.

few simple things that seem like they could make this game....
    1) dx11 for sure
    2) more physx interactive objects
    3) time and patience to detail EVERYTHING in the game
    4) Kleenex and some lotion

#4 is my preferred way to play the first one

Smart plan but just don't pull a SC Conviction to pull in the action buffs. If they can find a way to bring in new exciting features but keep the orignal formula that got you your fans then it could be a big game to look forward to.
