Sony NGP 'covers all bases'

All types of customer catered for, but core players to get early attention

Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment worldwide studios, says PSP successor NGP will cater to all types of gamers with a wide variety of software and applications.

"We are working on our popular series as well as brand new concepts, large games and short form games, augmented reality games, touch only games and network only games," he said on the official PlayStation site.

"We are also looking to expand over time from hardcore to casual games, games for younger consumers and non-game applications as well," Yoshida added.

"We understand traditional games are not the only entertainment that people look for, and NGP allows us to develop various types of entertainment on the same hardware platform, which is very exciting."

Yoshida said last month that NGP won't kill off PSP, claiming the firm has no intention to abandon the older platform at a time when its "struggling to meet demand".

What about those of us that don't care for overpriced portable gaming?

Hmm I tend to buy game consoles to play games but maybe thats just me. I couldnt care less about the other features and its annoying you have to pay more because of them.

Why slam it on the price we do not know yet. Can I ask how any of you will know how much it is? You might be surprised or you might not but leave the hate at the door until we know and embrace it as it will be a great piece of kit.

It's not hate .. its simply an observation ... considering I am dropping nearly £300 for a 3DS with games this month, I have no quarms about spending money on gadgets ... As long as I have it.

If you are seriuosly expecting the NGP to be anything less than £300 for example then your living in a dream world ... and even if it is Sony will be making a big loss on it.

If it's reasonably priced I will probably pick one up, if not then I will pick one up a couple of years down the line (as with the PS3) ... Some things are worth the money ... some things are not.

I think this is only good common sense thinking. In a market that's increasingly coming up against mobile phones that do many tasks and portable tablets (ipad, etc), it's an increasingly necessity for systems without any key feature for competitive advantage to have to compete on all fronts. The NGP is required to be more than a games machine by the essence of its design.

I guess it's somewhere between the PSP and a tablet computer, e.g. Ipad. This is a front that can only be won on price, IMO. I like the NGP. I've said elsewhere though that for me it's a replacement for home consoles. When time is slim to sit and play in front of a TV. That's where it could win my interest. I never bought into the PS3 from my PS2. Too many let downs. So my next Playstation could very well be the NGP. Although, the loss of a TV-Out has already been a disappointment for me. Although I feel this is Sony realising that the increased powerhouse could be competitive to their home console sales. Hopefully they'll reconsider this feature though.

The fact that GPS is only available on the 3G model is also a real irritation that makes no sense other than to force sales up to the contract model. Two tier systems are not particularly attractive to me.

At any rate, it's still keeping my interest.

Sony's developer boss has had a lot to say too recently (http://bit.ly/gMfnKO), seems like they're really trying to make up for PSP's poor western showing.

I guess since Sony dropped the GO at £225 on launch, they've got a bit of ground to make up that another "Good God" price isn't announced.

Not sure what they mean by covering all bases, but I hope they get the right balance of support this time. That's all it needs, a library of consistently exciting games. Any other feature is a bonus.

Any "gamer" that claims NGP hardware holds no interest for them is either a fanboy or not a proper gamer.I can understand if you love Ninty 1st party, that's fine but to dismiss something which is obviously impressive hardware is bull.
I don't care for Ninty stuff but the 3DS is obviously their best handheld hardware and I wouldn't say anything different.I'd love Ninty and Sony to be in close competition and all of us to benefit. You should want dedicated game hardware to sell, lest we be left with smartphones and tablets as our mobile devices.

Well if what sony says they won;t be more expensive than PS3 then i'd estimate between £200-£250 unless of course Sony meant launch PS3 price...

But seriously the ipod touch 4g is some sweet tech yet it costs less than £200 and that's Apple. I seriously don't think it will cost £300 that would be commercial suicde given off what they been saying in regards to lower than PS3 price and comparable to other portable handhelds.

    Yep. NGP or Ipad, hmmm...

Dont think you can compare an IPOD touch 4g to the NGP some how ... its not the same not by a long way ... the NGP is going to be cutting edge when it comes out .. and the price is going to reflect that... OLED screen same GPU as the IPAD 2 ... ?? no way will it be £200 ...

Its very easy to say that if its any more than £300 then it will be commercial suicide .. but it was no different with the PS3 .. That had (reletively) poor sales considering it was a new console , and that was partly due to the price, but it still sold ... The same will be with the NGP ... Being realistic its going to be £300 in this country anyway ..

Mmm... There's a difference between "interesting" and "impressive". Granted, I'm a Nintendo fanboy, so you may want to take everything I say with a pinch of salt, but while the NGP's obviously a mighty beast and some of its software (e.g. Reality Fighters) interests me, I wouldn't say the hardware does. Apart from the power (for a handheld), nothing it does is new. The rear touchscreen's a nice idea, and one that might work wonders, but we've seen touchscreens before.

Then again, hardware doesn't need to be interesting to be good. Hell, not even software does. Call of Duty, anyone? Pokémon? And I too like competition, and the prospect of a lower-priced 3DS when I get around to buying it.

I have no idea how much it will costs, i also have no idea how much it took to develop or how much the OLED screen that they designed will cost. Things were cut so they could make it affordable and they claim to have learned a lesson so i don't expect anything outrageous, but i have no idea how much it will cost. It looks amazing though. It does cover all the bases.

Well by the time NGP comes out the 5th gen touch will be out for the same price what 4g is now so lets see if 5g gets any diff specs.

Either way the NGP holds more interest due to real buttons and dual analogue sticks. Touchscreen only is severely limiting. On-rails crap is not proper gaming.

I honestly can't see the ngp being more than $250, it will be kind of stupid of them to try and sell their portable for more money than the ps3.
