Sony: NGP 'not just for the ultra-rich'

New handheld won't burn a hole in your wallet, promises VP

Ever since the announcement of the Sony NGP, the biggest point of speculation has been the handheld's launch price.

Cost has been somewhat of a stumbling block for the latest generation of Sony gaming systems, but Sony Computer Entertainment Europe VP Jim Ryan has suggested that won't be the case for NGP.

Speaking to the latest issue of PSM3, Ryan said the powerful new handheld would be "affordable".

When asked to clarify exactly who this would be affordable for the Sony exec revealed that it was planning to keep the price down to develop a broader audience: "Sony's ambitions when it comes to installed base are considerable, so we're not talking about the ultra-rich".

President of Sony Computer Entertainment worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida echoed similar sentiments yesterday, saying the PSP successor will cater to all types of gamers with a wide variety of software and apps.

Yoshida also said that Sony was returning to PS1-era mentality when third party studios played a key role in shaping the console.

Nice to see them cater for more than just one demographic. It's also for the fairly rich and just the plain old rich. :P

Joking aside I do hope they are going to make it affordable and by affordable I mean not too much more than the 3DS. Still until there's more information it on the price and features I'll reserve judgment.

I don't see this as being cheap. If it is the same price as the 3DS i'll be amazed. Anything more and I don't see myself buying it on launch.

i'd be more interested to know how much the games are going to cost, it doesn't matter too much about the console as you only buy that once.

No, no. The rich can also afford it as well as the ultra-rich.

Maybe Sony's figuring a return to the traditional model of game hardware making a loss to gain profit via software?

they just seem to be telling us its not gonna cost alot
heres an idea instead of saying that how about they actually
tell us instead of letting us wait for a big price tag that were all expecting >_<

Sony are on to a best seller here - they just need to convince the European Court of Human Rights that it is a crime for inmates in prisons to not own one of these new hand held consoles

I think your brother got ripped off unless it was a game deal and came with 3 games at that price. I'm pretty sure it was round the £425 mark.

Did he get any games with it? Financial Times also has the launch price at £425 for the UK.

I am with you there as this will be the most important cost factor because it is going to be a recurring cost as opposed to the one off cost of the console. As the media the games come on is relatively inexpensive do you think we will see sub £25 price points?

Yep, that sounds more like it. lol

And you're right it was crazy money.

I'd have a new found respect for Sony if they announced it more like this.....

Can you count suckers? I say the future is ours... if you can count!

Now, look what we have here before us. We got EA sitting next to Activision. We've got THQ right by Rockstar. Nobody is wasting nobody. That is a miracle, and miracles is the way things ought to be.

You're standing right now with nine delegates from 100 developers. And there's over a hundred more. That's 20,000 hardcore members. Forty thousand, counting affiliates, and twenty thousand more, not organized, but ready to fight, that's 60,000 soldiers. Now, there ain't but 20,000 hackers in the whole town.

    Can you dig it?
    Can you dig it?
    Can you digggggg it?

The problem in the past has been the man turning us against one another. We have been unable to see the truth, because we have been fighting for ten square feet of ground, our turf, our little piece of turf. That's crap, brothers! the turf is ours by right, because it's our turn. All we have to do is keep up the general truce. We take over one borough at a time. Secure our territory... secure our turf... because it's all our turf!.

Let me tell you why I really dont give a hoot about what the price will be...

    Original Iphone: $600+
    Ipad: $700+
    Ipad 2: $500+
    3DS: $250 (with 2 games): $350

nobody is lifting a finger to speak against those ridiculous prices, so why are we getting mad at Sony when they're doing their best to make this thing affordable??

I don't even care if it would cost around $400-500, Even though it wont even reach those prices Im gonna be getting one anyway... 8)
