Saints Row 3 censorship 'like defining porn'

How far can Volition go? Not "farts in a jar"

THQ's Volition has said that determining how far it can go with risky Saints Row 3 content is "like defining porn".

Speaking in the latest US Game Informer mag - which reveals the first Saints Row: The Third details - the studio discusses where it draws the line in terms of "crazy" ideas for the title - and this is a game that lets you beat up soldiers with a sex toy.

"It's like defining porn. I can't define it, but I know when I see it," senior producer Greg Donovan explained to the mag.

"Not every crazy weapon idea that gets thrown out at meetings ends up getting used. With some ideas, we're like 'that's not over the top... even we know that's distasteful' to the point where I don't even want to tell you what the ideas were. Put it that way."

Pushed for an example, Donovan revealed one rejected Saints Row 3 idea; the fart in a jar. As the name implies, this weapon would consist of a concentrated blast of flatulence, thrown at enemies like a grenade, who'd then vomit all over the place rather than engage you in combat.

Some members of the Saints Row team loved the idea, Donovan explains, but others weren't so keen and the idea was ultimately scrapped.

We can only imagine what else was cut from a series happy to have players spray pedestrians with poo...

THQ has been talking up the Saint's Row sequel for some months now, promising a game as visually rich as GTA IV, but one that clearly differentiates itself, and that is 'outrageous' and 'over the top'.
