Treyarch: Battlefield 3 engine is 'visually stunning'

Black Ops developer says it will continue to raise its own quality bar

Treyarch community manager Josh Olin has said that the Frostbite 2 engine powering Battlefield 3 looks "really beautiful".

Speaking to HipHopGamerShow, the Call of Duty: Black Ops man said: "It was a visually stunning engine. I think it was the Fault Line trailer they released, it had some awesome Direct X11 effects going on. I know it was running on PC, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it on Xbox 360 and PS3."

Asked whether Activision's Call of Duty studio's need to up the ante visually, Olin said: "Irrespective of what anybody else does, we always need to be elevating that quality bar.

"The Call of Duty engine's very lightweight, versatile and... it's something that our team's just really experienced with, both teams are. The engine's really good, it's a very powerful engine, and we can layer in and update things if we want to, like in World at War when we really blew out the fire technology."

Infinity Ward, maker of the Call of Duty engine, told us earlier this month: "Speaking hypothetically and from a top-line philosophy... building a ground-up engine is counter productive... We never - for any game - build a 'brand new' engine, but iterate on a solid base... adding what's needed and innovates it."

The second instalment in the Fault Line series of Battlefield 3 trailers was released earlier today. You can watch it here.

Dont you need to start raising the bar before you can continue raising it? :?

Wow congrats Treyarch for adding some fire effects, while DICE is building an engine with stunning real time rendering, breathtaking destruction, 64 players and great animations

When InfinityWard have come out and said that making a new engine will create too much stress and time constraints-- I doubt Treyarch would 1) Make a new engine, 2) rework this current OUTDATED engine to work to the level everyone wants.

Goodluck though, you'll need it by next year.

You do know most game engines are formulated on the basis of old ones don't you? I mean not to step in on your little anti-COD love in but Battlefield 3 is not a new engine, read the tech news, you may learn something

Next you'll be telling me that Black Ops is the very same engine as COD4.......................... it's not by some considerable distance.

Plus admittedly the Battlefield graphics are stunning, but the BlackOps graphics were fantastic too although its probably not cool to say so.

were you playing a special copy of the game because at times most PS2 games put BO to shame for graphics.

About games engine's rockstar created the RAGE for gta4,frostbite 2, unreal whatever ..yes some are made from scratch others striped and rebuilt like the new bioshock but come on ,Activision need to splash out on a full overhaul of there games engine. Why cos dirty hackers and glitchers ruin it's simple system, add to the fact they dont do dedicated servers for us equals a bad game expirience all round. And if you think I'm ranting bad about cod no i play it regular like a junkie, but like a junkie i know the stuff i'm addictied to is crap and dirty.
Is it worth it's over priced disc compared to other games out there cheaper and better?

When will PC gamers learn that "graphics" don't make a game?!! Crysis 1 should've taught people that!

And there's me thinking it was nice to have a rival actually complement the other for a change...

There are that think that, but I would say that all gamers who think gfx are all are wrong. And in my opinion, Crysis was a great game. You could use the engine to your advantage with respects to cover, some environment maipulation. Although the best environment manipulation would go to the BadCo guys there :)

I will second that. Play MW2 and then play BLOPS straight after, you will see the difference is immense in not only the graphics but the frame rate. BLOPS is boring as hell and they need to do something to reboot the franchise. MW3 really is last chance saloon with me and the COD series.

I am enjoying KZ3 so much more!

why would infinity ward spend time, money and effort on a new engine when idiots still run out and buy teh new CoD game anyway? its the same as folk who MUST have the latest iS***e pad/pod/phone.
The frostbite2 will probably last for a lot longer and still look amazing and EA/Dice are chucking all their eggs in teh basket to make a great FPS to really show what can be done.

graphics dont matter too much, to some extent (coming from a console gamer :P ) i used to play MW2 religiously but have recently joined the BadCo2 crowd. and i will never go back. BLOPS looked like a cartoon - same as WaW - and played worse each time. i guess frostbit 2.0, being version 2.0, is a redone frosbit engine with more beans. badco2 is bloody amazing i pay little attention to the graphics, its the scale of the battle i cant get over! just hope the draw-in is good on consoles for long distance sniping!
