Just check it out before you scream 'OMG TEH FAKEZORZ" in the comments. Some bloke has actually got Kinect working with PS3. Working badly, mind, but it's a start.
As spotted via Kotaku, this is the work of hacker Shantanu Goel, who manages to navigate the PS3 XMB menu system, execute a game - Killzone 3 - and play it all using hand gestures picked up by a Kinect sensor.
This is relayed to PS3 using magic, wizardry and a little PC program that's apparently in pre-alpha state.
Well, he doesn't so much as play Killzone, rather he makes it move in a completely unplayable way and it doesn't seem to work very well. Baby steps though, people.
Don't believe your eyes? The code, instructions and everything else can be downloaded here, so you can try controlling your PS3 with great difficulty for yourself. Because convenience and functionality is so last century.

kinect has gone multi-plat! . . . . . . . ps3 really does do everything

I suppose this basically confirms that Kinect cannot run very complicated games. Though this is an impressive techy accomplishment, why is pumping my palm twice directly forwards better than moving my thumb 1 millimeter? I guess this could be cool with something like echocrhrome ii, though. . .

Please explain how it 'basically confirms' what you said when you're basing your statement on 1 hacker's attempt at dealing with Kinect.
Also - Killzone 3 wasn't built for Kinect, surprisingly, so the guy is always restricted on controls and gameplay etc.

this guy is gonna get so sued by Sony, the PS3 was never intended to be used like this, the poor sod will end up at Guantánamo getting probed & all sorts

Headline should say "barely playing killzone 3". I wasnt expecting him to be running and gunning all over the place, but he couldnt even get the camera looking in the right direction.

Little known fact... Kinect cant do a FPS that isn't on rails, end of story.

and sat just behind the camera is a terrible gamer holding a controller.

There's so much fail in this comment I don't even think I need to elaborate

No. But how to you conclude from a lone hackers attempt at getting Kinect to work on a PS3 game that "this basically confirms that Kinect cannot run very complicated games"? It doesnt confirm ANYTHING other than a hacker via a PC and some cleverness got a Kinect in part working on Sonys machine.

Nice bit of Trolling there Mogs even your bleeding avatar is a lame attempt at Troll humour.

Lame being the appropriate word.
Read in the Metro on the way into work that MS are the 2nd largest net worth company in the world, so indeed Mogs, RIP

Hm, that's probably true - my comment was a bit unfair. However, I still don't think it will be possible to do something like an FPS with Kinect. I'd be just fine with being proved wrong, though.

I'd like to see a mix of the systems but in a different way. I'm thinking something like a ghost recon or splinter cell type game, that you play with a normal controller, but you have 3D and kinect so that any HUD info or video feed from a UAV or sticky cam thing can be shown in the foreground using 3D and interacted with using kinect.
The level of immersion would be incredible! And you still get to play the majority of the time "normally"

Yep, smells like someone playing off-camera.

In this genre Kinect gets as complex as on rails and that is to yet to be released or even demonstrated to the public, it's nothing to get all defensive about Move can't run all the kids games as good as Kinect and Kinect can't run fully functional FPS. It's swings and roundabouts.
I would really like to see this Gears on rails demoed, it would be interesting to see what all the different gestures will be to do things like shoot, melee, change weapon, reload, zoom in to shoot and to move forward in-case you can stop and start on a set path.

Sorry, if you didn't read it on a video games forum, it isn't true!
Crossblade_2000 on 21 Mar '11 said:
Not sure I like the idea of an on rails shooter for Kinect. Surely the best hardware for an on rails shooter would be the Wii or the PSmove? I mean, how do you press the trigger for shoot seeing as how there's no buttons? Plus, it's not the most progressive of genres, and I don't see it making a big splash in a market dominated by open world sandbox games and online MP. I really hope that Gears of War : Exile is more than just a gimmicky cash in.

I don't see why, the code on how to do it is right there. If the code didn't work then people wouldn't be confirming it.

Looks interesting, but I can't see how going control less with a FPS makes any sort of sense, maybe for Mirror's Edge, but not a shooter, then again not even Mirror's Edge. How would you walk around, pivot, strafe, fire? Meh will make gaming more complicated than it needs to be. It might be useful for other things though, like navigating menus and things that require very little complexity. Game playing such as FPS, platformers and driving I don't see this making any sense at all, unless you take away certain elements that the player had control of before.
Nice hack, good job to the guys actually using their brains to do something that isn't going to get their asses sued and making our lives more annoying for playing and buying games.
humanhand on 21 Mar '11 said:
That set up needs a better sounds system, poor guy. I wish I knew how to hack.

Oh...oh...quick! quick! Sign me up! I TOTALLY want to play Killzone as gracefully and smoothly as in the video with Kinect, definitely an advantage. I mean, look at that strategy. Stare at the ceiling? Why didn't I think of that? That's sure the helghasts one weakness.
"Guy's, he's not paying attention to us!"
"Well try harder!"
"I'm becoming self concious!"

Spending 50 hours coding so that you can stare at the ceiling in your favourite FPS : Priceless!
I'm only joking though, good on all the amateur coders for attempting stuff like this. Some truly amazing stuff coming from people with more time (and inclination) than I could ever find.
As for the Move vs Kinect debate, I own a 360 but I still struggle to see how Kinect can be integrated into core games. As far as I can see neither has got it completely right yet Now if you could get the Kinect camera to recognise the Move ball-dildo thingy as well as your movements then you could use it to lean and stuff. Meh maybe Wii 2 (Poo?) will have the complete package.
