Nintendo 'won't work with garage developers'

Reggie Fils-Aime draws the line between 'hobbyists' and "true indie devs"

Nintendo of America big man Reggie Fils-Aime says Nintendo has no interest in working with "garage developers".

Referring to the smallest of game-makers that release low budget titles on mobile platforms, Reggie says Nintendo has no interest in pursuing such business.

"I would separate out the true independent developer vs. the hobbyist," said Fils-Aime during an interview with Gamasutra.

"We are absolutely reaching out to the independent developer," he stipulated, before casting aside the possibility Nintendo will let those "hobbyists" loose on its platforms.

"Where we've drawn the line is we are not looking to do business today with the garage developer. In our view, that's not a business we want to pursue," he added, reflecting sentiments from Iwata's GDC speech in which he said the free and low-price games hitting mobile platforms are degrading the value of game software.

Is Nintendo being small minded in a fast-changing business, or is it protecting its platforms from the mounds of junk that overflows marketplaces such as the iTunes and Android app stores?
