Steam gets Skype voice codec

SILK codec provides "significant improvement" to in-game chat

Valve's announced a Steam update set to introduce the SILK voice codec, which is the same developed and used by Skype.

SILK provides a "significant improvement" to Steam's voice chat quality, says Valve, and is available both in one-on-one or group chats, and works both on the desktop and in-game.

The update comes after Valve added Steam Guard to the digi download service earlier this month, which it says "greatly increases account security".

Valve boss Gabe Newell is so confident in the feature he gave out his username and password at GDC, and challenged attendees to hack his account.
