Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is official

Heading to Xbox, PS3 and PC this winter

Capcom's officially announced Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, following last week's magazine leak.

As previously rumoured, Operation Raccoon City is a collaboration between Capcom and Vancouver-based SOCOM studio Slant 6 Games and is scheduled for release this Winter.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Screenshot
Set in September 1998 during the original T-virus outbreak, ORC is described as "a true third person team based shooter experience" set within the "dark and sinister" universe of Resident Evil 2 and 3.

"With a cover up required, Umbrella orders an elite team into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors," Capcom's official blurb explains. "Hearing of this plan, the US Government dispatches its own special forces to uncover any evidence that exposes the cause of the viral infection and Umbrella's actions."

Players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier (U.S.S.), competing alone or in four player co-op in a battle against all the competing forces at play in Raccoon City.

Capcom promises a "thrilling triple threat battle", with zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W's) added to the mix as players not only compete against an opposing squad but also tackle this third unpredictable element.

Fans can expect the return of original Resident Evil enemies, iconic landmarks such as the Raccoon City Police Department and fan favourite characters, including Leon S. Kennedy, who as a rookie police officer in Raccoon City is on your hit list to eliminate, says Capcom.

In addition, a number of competitive online multiplayer modes are planned. "Each one of these will provide a unique gaming experience thanks to the three way combat between the Umbrella Security Service, US Special Ops and threat of zombies and B.O.W's that could only exist in the deadly and twisted Resident Evil Universe," says Capcom.

Promising stuff. See more Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City details here.

You lost me at "a true third person team based shooter experience", such a shame the RE Series lost its Survival Horror roots.

I was thrilled because I thought as they return to raccoon city it would be the last resident evil. It would have been an awsome story to have it as the last game. There you should terminate the umbrella and the zombies or as the umbrella or a zombie eradicate every living life. but no they make a sequel to an old game. :(
But it might be good. I will not judge until I played it.

Given that it was the forced co-op of Resi 5 that stopped it being scary and feeling like a true Resi (amongst a pile of other things, like Jun Takeuchi) I think the best we can hope for is a massive helping of fan service. Which does seem to be Capcom's plan with this.

I think it says a lot that I need to be won over by this, too. Its surely one of the heralds of the apocalypse that I'm feeling a bit 'meh' about resident evil games. :|

Capcom squeezing the sponge of Resident Evil now... too bad instead of giving fans what they want, they insist on going the multiplayer western way. I guarantee they'll use the same engine from R4 and 5 too, just finding the easiest way to make one of the most unoriginal ideas for a series that was once great, in the cheapest way possible. Foot plant aiming must be taken out if they seriously think people will buy this... but if certain other shooters sell so well then I guess people will buy anything with shooter in the mix.

For me Resident Evil had to go back to it's horror roots. Sure R4 and 5 had somewhat horror moments but they involved monsters that looked like they were ripped from either Silent Hill or or Earth Defence Force. Id be happy with a fresh storyline getting rid of all the characters that have been turned into stupid exaggerated bimbos and action men. The engine from R4 would work but not all too well from a third person perspective. I remember seeing a mod for the 4th game online were someone had planted camera angles just like the first few games in the series. Sure it would be a little difficult aiming at first but as long as there is a red dot sight it would be picked up soon enough. I don't care if people bitch about auto aim not being on or something, games are made far too easy these days.

Give us more scares, more original monster designs, non-douchebaggy characterisation, a better written plot, more of a sense of survival without throwing tons ammunition our way, and certainly no annoying overrated bad guys like Wesker, and I'd be a happy bunny again.

I would forgive a day 1 rewrite with a whole new cast and crew to be fair. Between resi 4 - 5 and the silly little in betweener and them god awful movies....... They turned resi franchise to sh!t. 1 2 3 is where the real resi fun was. A whole new story with new characters and some nice fresh game mechanics and I would be a happy puppy :)

This, i never like Wesker in the first place. But in recent iterations he's come across as a saturday morning cartoon character, coming back every week for his next dastardly plan to take over the world. The series certainly needs an overhaul, or a re-envisaging, i want classic slow, takes 10 bullets to kill zombies. I don't want to be swamped with ammo or health kits. And for for the love of all thats holy stop with this Uroboros bulls**t, i want Zombies! not angsty villagers with pitchforks and 4 heads, with an unhealthy obcession for tentacles. /rant

I agree with BenJy. Bring back the horror! Bring back the scary gameplay from Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3. Ah, I miss those days. A big mansion with zombies scaring me to death. But a Resident Evil shooter does not scare me to death, it probably makes me "bored to death". Why has Capcom decided only to make shooters nowadays?

I think they'll get it right this time, especially with online play now, unlike in the PS2 days

I'm losing faith in the games industry. When will devs realise that multiplayer is not needed in every game. Resi was always a single player series and was better that way. The co-op in 5 just made it move ever more away from the survival horror, hell it just felt like an action game.

It is a shame that we don't get survival horror games in the mould of the old classics but this does sound quite interesting.

You know my perfect Resident Evil would be a game with extremely limited ammo (no guns in the game until you're about 25% through), any zombie/enemy is capable of killing you, get bitten once and you're infected and must use a rare antidote to cure (put 4 of these vials in the game - no more), when you're injured, you're injured, and must use bandages and whatnot to slowly heal yourself (this happens during game-time), injuries include broken bones and limbs which all heal slowly and affect aim etc.

Also, make it so that you are ABSOLUTELY ALONE in the game and must survive on your Todd.

well, since we all come together on the same page, and i'm sure all of the official forums complain the way we do about this, who da f.ck is in charge? who changes this game into the biggest shame of all history day by day?

Why can't resident evil go back to its survival horror roots. Thats what made the series great. Third person shooters and team based stuff is what ruined 5. Listen to the fans Capcom and go back to what makes resident evil great.

I don't think they should release another RE untill they make it go back to like 1, 2 and 3 were... backtracking, doing puzzels etc etc... RE4 was just like any other game out their... walk forwards, kill, kill, pick up ammo, and walk forwards some more, like 2% of the game was backtracking and it'd lost it's Resi feel completly IMO.

at least they r takin it bk 2 raccoon city, whilst 4 n 5 wer decent games, all the creatures and modified zombies made the game lose its edge a think, 2 n 3 wer great so we shud give it a chance, but if ur not able 2 move while ur aiming ur gun again am gonna lose the plot!!

  22. Very_Silver_Ownz on 28 Mar '11 said:

Socom meets Resi Evil ? Whose bright idea was that ? I'd rather have a PS3 version of Resi Evil Revelations which the 3DS is getting. That actually looks like Resi Evil.

Whats next ? MGS turning into a racing game ? or GTA turning into a sports game ?

This is being developed by the team who made SOCOM: Confrontation - a game so bad, Sony had to get Zipper Interactive back in to do the next SOCOM. I must concede, I hate both the concept and the choice in developer working on it.

Now I do enjoy a good survival horror, and I also enjoyed Resident Evil 5, so I don't know but this game sounds pretty cool to me. While it will not be very scary, probably more just a scary setting, even though we are so desensitized to the whole zombie apocalypse vibe that that alone will not scare us anymore, but it will probably have a few moments like Dead Space or F.E.A.R. where things jump out at you. The thing about the game industry is it's all about innovation and trying new things, while a third person shooter is nothing new, a squad based shooter set in the Resident Evil universe is. I think this will open the RE franchise up to a broader audience, and enjoy moderate if not good sales, and I'm looking forward to it.

I don't think they should release another Resident Evil until they remake 1, 2 and 3 on Dead Space 2's engine and better voice acting.

3DS has two upcoming Resi games & one of them is your proper RE title not this raccoon ops BS.
