Xbox 360 disc update adds 1GB extra storage - Report

Microsoft DVD's to get 15 percent boost?

Microsoft's mysterious updated Xbox 360 disc format will add an extra 1GB of storage to the console's game discs.

That's according to Digital Foundry's "highly placed development source", which has apparently confirmed a 14-15% boost for Xbox 360's DVD format.

"The maximum space allocated to game data on the current disc format is just 6.8GB out of a maximum of 7.95GB on a standard dual layer DVD, with over 1GB dedicated to a DVD-Video partition that also contained anti-piracy security sectors," it writes.

"Astonishingly, this meant that the last generation PlayStation 2 had a higher level of raw storage available to games developers than the newer Xbox 360. It seems that this video partition has either been drastically reduced or omitted completely in the new format Microsoft is looking to roll-out."

Last night Microsoft launched a preview program for the new discs, but wouldn't elaborate on what's actually different about them.

PS3's Blu-ray format holds up to 50GB on a dual-layer, which allowed games like Final Fantasy XIII to feature higher quality sound and cutscenes due to its ample space.

Xbox 360 developers could soon have a little bit more to work with too.
