Sony NGP release date could be delayed after Japan crisis

Tretton suggests single-region 2011 release, cites production problems

The Sony NGP could be subject to delays after suffering production problems during the Japan crisis that has devastated the country.

Bloomberg reports that the Sony handheld may well get a staggered release, the production problems being cited by Sony America president Jack Tretton.

"NGP may be introduced in a single region this year instead of starting sales in Asia, Europe or the U.S. in time for the end-of-year holiday shopping season," the business and financial news site continues.

This comes, however, after Sony made clear plans to introduce the NGP in "at least one territory" by the end of the year, suggesting a somewhat staggered schedule from the off and the potential for a single-region release.

That was before disaster struck in Japan, however, and production problems appear now to be making "at least one" territory sound more like "one" territory will receive the Next Generation Portable by the end of the year.

Sony had originally put a 'late 2011' release date on the NGP.
