Resident Evil producer Masachika Kawata has said that Capcom sees Resident Evil Revelations as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 5.
Speaking to Nintendo Power magazine in the US, Kawata explained how Revelations - unlike its other upcoming 3DS Resi titles Mercenaries - sticks closer to its survival horror roots and as a result is considered a direct sequel to Resident Evil 5.

Late last year Kawata told Famitsu that Revelations wouldn't stick so close to the formula established in Resident Evil 4, opting for more scares over puzzles.
"One that avoids the style of Resident Evil 4 and instead goes with the old style up to RE3, where you're solving puzzles and exploring" he said.
Capcom has also announced that debut Resident Evil 3DS title, The Mercenaries 3D will include a playable demo of Resident Evil Revelations.

Very much looking forward to this, I loved Res 4 on the Wii and number 2 on the PS2. I want Res 3DS action NOW! Actually not right now, I'm loving StreetFighter 3D at the mo, the online is amazing!

Can we not do a direct sequel to Resi 4 and just forget that 5 ever happened?

maybe they should just remake Resi 5.

Funny I was thinking the exact opposite. Seeming as RE4 ruined the series and all.

How did resident evil 4 ruin anything? I think it's still one of the best survival horror games to date. Unlike resident evil 5 which didn't seem to have much horror.

Resi 4 ruined the series as it became more action oriented and less scary. Infected village people (not the YMCA variety) are not as scary as zombies. Fact! Resi 4 was a good game in its own right but there are loads of action shooters out there and too few genuine survival horror games. Capcom should have left Resi as it was and had Resi 4 as a new IP but they knew the name would bring the customers. Can't wait for Revelations, couldn't care less about Mercenaries.

That right there pi$$es the hell out of me. The Resi series was always about action. Silent Hill was the one that was actually scary, Resi was action horror always has been.
Resi 5 though was something else. More gears of war then a Resi game.

RE4 is survival Horror only it focuses on other psychological reactions instead of purely being scared, reactions like anxiety, panic, hysteria etc... rise from several situations like when you're running very low on bullets then you hear a chainsaw. RE4 was a welcomed change tbh as the series was in a bit of trouble as it was running out of ideas.

I could say the same thing about Resi 1 with its awful voice overs which were hilariously bad. Resi 2 wasn't that scary, what's so scary about shooting a zombie with a shotgun ? And Resi 3 well that game was a joke.
Resi 4 gave crediblity to the series but the fans of the ancient controls, terrible voice overs and crappy graphics can't let go of the past.

I think I was one of the few who actually enjoyed RE5! Although RE4 was the only game I'd played in the series to date. I did play it co-op alot though, so didn't have to deal with Sheva's annoying AI too much.

Well let's see.
No atmosphere
laughable enemies
next to no puzzles
a greater emphasis on action (And the RE series has always been survival horror not ACTION so don't even bother with that argument)
The story was laughable
It ripped multiple games off
And all in all it was just a very poor Resident Evil product. An utterly awesome ACTION game which I enjoyed very much but it was in no way a real RE game and that's not opinion it's fact. I don't consider the multiple tiny links to the old series worthy of it being called Resident Evil 4.
With this said though I enjoyed RE5 too but the series needs to go back to its Survival Horror roots while updating the gameplay camera Angles somewhat for this new crop of "Fans" Who can't play something unless it's like Gears or C.O.D.

It would be quite easy to criticise Resident Evil 5 but it's also fun too, so I will:
1. For all it's graphical progress from the last installment it managed to summon up about 100th of the atmosphere and the only thing that was scary was your hopeless AI teammate obsessively trying to give you health when you didn't want it.
2. It's hard to maintain your suspension of disbelief and immersion when you discover that rabid zombie dogs are leaving gun ammo behind. Useful? Yes. Convincing? No. Lazy game design? Oh, we've got a lot more of that for you, sir.
3. It makes you feel like a massive racist.
4. It told my girlfriend that I slept with her mum.
5. When walking past a playground of children it used to cough nervously a lot and seemed to shuffle along uneasily at a slightly slower pace than usual.

The Dead Space series is better than the Resident Evil series, its even took away the "Survival Horror" crown from it.
This does look good though as it seems to be going back to its roots.
Will this be using the RES 4/5 engine, or a new one?
I want a remake of Resident Evil 3, it's my favourite Res game along with 4.
