Valve details PS3 Steam support for Portal 2

Cross-platform play, achievements and more

Valve has revealed full details of how Steam will be supported by the PS3 version of Portal 2.

The first title to support Steam on a console, Portal 2 offers cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, and achievements, all powered by Steam. Steam on the PS3 also saves co-op game progress and single player saved games to the Steam Cloud, enabling players to pick up where they left off on any PlayStation3.

The Steam overlay for PS3 provides access to both PSN and Steam friends, displaying their in-game or online status and providing a quick pathway to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites. Steam Achievements are earned in lockstep with PSN Trophies and are also accessible within the Steam overlay.

Steam on the PS3 provides access to all of these features once the player has linked their PlayStation Network account with a Steam account, which is done right within the game. A Steam user can login to an existing account, and anyone new to Steam can create an account with the click of a button.

In the spirit of Steam Play, linked players of the PS3 version of Portal 2 can also access and play their copy of Portal 2 on any PC or Mac by redeeming an in-box access code on their computer. The Steam client verifies the linked customer and then lists Portal 2 among their library of Steam games for PC and Mac.

I think incentives such as this are a much better way of ensuring players keep hold of their games and slow the second hand market (if thats what developers want to do), in contrast to ea's online pass system which just punnishes second hand gamers.

Basically signed into PSN and Steam at the same time, good work Valve.

It's a shame that the people I'm likely to want to play this with have a 360, otherwise the PS3 version would be a cert.

they're only human. how do you expect them to port all those pc games onto the ps3 for free?

Seeing as though my PC is too s**t to play games on and I have no desire to buy a new one anytime soon, could I give the Steam copy to someone else while keeping the PS3 version for myself?

I agree, but I think that this approach means that 2nd hand copies of Portal 2 will be worthless as you'll need to redeem a code with your PS3 version to add it your Steam account. Given Valve's history of continued support for games through Steam, I'm not sure that there is a reason to trade their games in.

And not only that, but you could be playing Portal 2 on your PC whilst your buddy joins you in co-op through your PS3. Awesome. PS3 version pre-ordered.

As soon as they announced this with Steamworks, I was sold on the PS3 version (unless Valve completely f**k it up on PS3, which I just can't see happening).

I assume a second hand copy won't be totally worthless, it will be worthless as an online game. The steamworks code will work the same as an online pass basically. You will still be able to play the game single player (I can't believe they will make this game require online to 'activate' it, no other game has on console as far as I'm aware) and you'll still be able to play split screen co-op.

And I think your mate will only be able to play you on your PS3 if he has his own Steam account with Portal 2 - I'm 99% sure you won't be able to log into your Steam account on your PC/PS3 at the same time.

BAHAHAHA! You're one funny guy. Live superior to Steam? I'll say that's the words of someone who doesn't use Steam.

BTW : Borderlands Game Of The Year edition £7.50 today (includes early access to Duke Nukem Forever demo)

Yeah that guys clearly buried himself up Microsofts ass. I'm going to be getting the 360 version, but only because that's the console I own. I'd say Live is a superior service to PSN, but MS really need to open up and allow Steam on Live. That'd be awesome.

  20. gypscanuck on 13 Apr '11 said:

The idiot who said Live is better then Steam doesn't know that it's the best community\online thing for PC and now Consoles. Fool.

  21. Dajmin on 13 Apr '11 said:

What's the betting that we see Steam appearing on Live some time in the next few months? Now that they're sharing things like iPlayer and whatever, the competition is really out for whoever can attract the most fans. If you can share a Steam account across 2 or more platforms (and what would happen with your PC purchases if you had both 360 and PS3 Steam accounts?) then the console that allows you to do that will attract a lot of new buyers.

    @infernoX

Either by Cloud Gaming ala Onlive or Emulation software imbedded in Steam - both of which would require a window view only on the PS3 - or allow me access to all the PS3 games (orange box) that I already own via Steam

    Just a few suggestions...

That wont happen, because MS wont let anything and everything ruin their service. In which is a good service as it is.

    Anyhow, PS3 version ordered.

I can only guess that you have friends on xbl that you plan to play with.
As the PS3 version will play the same but will have the free game upgrades that you can't get on the 360. Just like when valve made team fortress on 360 and ms wanted to charge users with the same upgrades PC users were getting for free in steam.

Also I think the PS3 will get mouse and keyboard support so it'll control just as well as the PC version

Was going to get this on PC, but now i think i'll give the PS3 version a whirl.

  32. starvinbull on 14 Apr '11 said:

Have to laugh at all the PS3 owners not sure whether to get the PC version. Read the article it basically says the PS3 version is also a PC version linked to 1 PSN and 1 Steam account. Just get PS3 version as first priority PC second priority and 360 if you don't have either of the other 2 platforms. Seems strange that M$ would allow for such an important game to suffer from avoidable inferiority on 360. Have to say 1 thing for Live though, as rigid and uncompromising as M$ have been on several occasions Live is a great market and clearly is the best thing going for the 360 as well as being increasingly profitable.

Well, it was a smart move for Sony to get into bed with Valve... now......

..can you imagine if they secure the next Half Life in some kind of PS3/PC hybrid deal?

    Can we spell coup?

valve mastered this for the ps3. they said that the brought in ppl that worked on the uncharted series to make sure that its the best version of the game. they will have a redeem code in all ps3 versions. so for those of you who want to play with ur friends on pc/mac just give them the code and good to go. valve also stated that if the get good feedback then thay will deffinantly look into bringing other/older steam games to the ps3. plus when have you ever known valve to release JUST ONE title on steam? NEVER. keep that in mind. i suppose we will receive more deets at e3 in june.
